Problem with "float left" in three column site

3 New Member
Hi,

Hopefully someone can help me here. I am recoding my web site. The original site was just in HTML but I am teaching myself CSS for the new site.

My new site consists of three columns: a sidebar floated left, a sidebar floated right, and the 'main content' which has wide margins to accommodate the floated sidebars.

I am working on the main content. I want to do something very simple: I have an image floated left, with some text to the right of it. I then want to have a new paragraph (a list of links) which begins below the image, not alongside it.

But when I use <br clear="left"> in the HTML, or if I use a division for the list of links (plus a particular class) which has "clear:left " in the CSS, the paragraph clears the content of the left sidebar.

What am I doing wrong? I don't want to clear the content of the sidebar: I just want to clear the image in the 'main content' column.

If it is of any help, I have uploaded the draft page here:

http://www.reiki-evolution.co.uk/draft/about-reiki.htm

I am sure this is very simple, but it is quite frustrating. I am forced to resort to using a spacer <pre> </pre> which is not very elegant, and unsatisfactory depending on the text size chosen in the browser.

Hopefully someone can help me with my current confusion.

Best wishes,

I am confused. The page looks to me like what you want it to do. 'clear:left' is designed to do what you experience, but that's not want you want, so why are you trying to use it?

One problem: you are using end tags with '/>'. This is an Xhtml ending but you are using HTML. Remove the slash on all those or some browsers may interpret that as an 'end of markup'.

Also, if you have a list of links, you should make it a list and not a paragraph. A paragraph contains inline elements, like a line of text. A list, is a list, so list your links.

Also, please read the Article above about doctypes.

If you alter the text size you will see that the list of links does not always clear the image in the 'main content' column. My question is, basically, how do I make text (and text that will be in a similar position on other pages) clear this image and start below it?

Hoping that someone here can see the glitch I'm experiencing. I build a site for an organization in which a <TD> which recurs on most of the pages displays exactly as intended in IE, Netscape and Firefox. It is seen here: http://www.lipsa.net/, and the external style sheet is at http://www.lipsa.net/pbr.css. Note how the dark green TD "sidebar" on the right of the screen flushes all the way to the right, and up against both the top and...

We are working on a project to decipher a record structure of an old accounting system that originates from the late80's mid-90's. We have come across a number format that appears to be a "float" but doesn't match any of the more standard implementations. so we are hoping this is a recognizable number storage format with an identifiable name AND pre-built conversion method similiar to the "struct" modules available in python. Here is...

I have a SQL query I'm invoking via VB6 & ADO 2.8, that requires three "Left Outer Joins" in order to return every transaction for a specific set of criteria. Using three "Left Outer Joins" slows the system down considerably. I've tried creating a temp db, but I can't figure out how to execute two select commands. (It throws the exception "The column prefix 'tempdb' does not match with a table name or alias name used in the query.")

I have a two-column layout where I want the left column to have a colored background while the right column (main content div) has a white background. Please see http://www4.scoe.net/rfox/nest/index4.html My problem is that the colored background in the left column only extends to the height of the content leaving a white gap below it. How can I make the left nav's color stretch the entire height? On a side note, in Internet Explorer...

I'm investigating a puzzling problem involving an attempt to generate a constant containing an (IEEE 754) "infinity" value. (I understand that special float values are a "platform-dependent accident" etc...) The issue appears possibly to point to a bug in the Python compiler, with it producing inconsistent results. I'm using "Python 2.4.2 (#67, Sep 28 2005, 12:41:11) on win32". This code sometimes produces a float of 1.0, sometimes...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
