100% Height for Left Column

I have a two-column layout where I want the left column to have a
colored background while the right column (main content div) has a
white background. Please see http://www4.scoe.net/rfox/nest/index4.html

My problem is that the colored background in the left column only
extends to the height of the content leaving a white gap below it. How
can I make the left nav's color stretch the entire height?

On a side note, in Internet Explorer and only Internet Explorer, the
photo in the gray message box disappears, but is fine in every other
browser. Any ideas on that wacky issue?

Thanks.

The default skin for nucleus (http://www.nucleuscms.org)
solved that by having a div _outer_ to both columns, and
doing a vertical-only repeat of a gif of the same color
as background behind that column.

I'm not saying that's the best way, but that's what they did.
When I widened the column in the CSS, it took me quite a while
to figure out why (it seemed) that the blocks _in_ the column
widened but the column itself did not.

Suggest

Set the left margin on left column to 0

Add a left border rule to content class of the appropriate color, solid
and the width of the left column.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I tried 'em both out, but in this
instance, they created more problems. I can't believe there's not a
simple and effective way to achieve this. :/

I wound up adding a spacer image at the bottom of the left column and
adjusting the footer's z-index to float above it. Not elegant, but it
works.

Thanks again.

For those that follow with the same issue, a simple method to achieve a
two column layout with both columns appearing equal in height can be
found at:

Hello, I have a problem with CSS code. I want to have one menu column with a fixed width and a 100% height and the rest of the page for content. ---------------- |.|.|<--100%-->| |.M.|----------| |.E.|----------| |.N.|----------| |.U.|----------|

Greetings, I am encountering some issues regarding using float while desiring to set the height to 100%. This is likely due to my own misunderstanding of the way things actually function -- any guidance would be appreciated. To summarize, I would like to have a variable-width, 100% height, left-floating column. However, it seems as though with Mozilla/Netscape that height: 100% is not interpreted as I would

I've got the problem described in the table above. I've put a div red with some text inside a TD, but its height is less than 100% of TD height as you can see. I've defined the following styles: div.test { background-color:red; height:100%; width: 100%; } table.test { border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; background-color:yellow; } td.test { border: 1px solid #CCCCCC; }

I'm trying to create a page: Three sections (left, topright and bottomright), each with a heading and scrolling (overflow) content. The size of these sections should be based upon the size of the user's viewable area in their browser. I'm close... really close, but I'm confused over how to mix specific measurements with percentages. When I began, things were quite nice: (http://play.psmonopoly.com/autosize.html). I am trying to create some pages and have them take 100% of the window, but I cannot get 100% to work. If I set the height of my div, the page displays a scroll bar and it looks like I set the height to about 150%. I tried using CSS, now I am trying tables. Can someone show me where I am mixing things up? Thanks. --Master Sheet <%@ Master Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="master.master.cs" Inherits="pts" %>

Since I began doing CSS layouts instead of tables last year, it seems like every single site I do I run into the same problem -- getting a div to stretch to 100% height. I find the solution to it, it works; then when I try the exact same solution for the next site I do, it refuses to work properly. It's very frustrating how such a simple concept can be so hard to do... http://www.pinstripepresentations.com/stephanie/residential.php There...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
