W3C HTML/XHTML Standard outta fashion?

Recently I have been trying to find a web designer that can follow the
W3C HTML/XHTML. We need a website for a non-profit re-designed and
upgraded to conform to W3c HTML/XHTML and usability standards. We have
received many quotes, and excellent/impressive portfolios. However none
of the designer had any sites in their portfolio that conformed to the
W3c standard. I am very disappointed.

Is there is directory/listing of web developer who conform to the
standards i.e. their site actually pass the XHTML validator?

Thanks

Oh depress me even further!

I looked at the first few, the design houses' own homepages.

Transitional doctypes
XHTML Appendix C
XML prologs
<tablemarkup
content-type <meta>
Confusion between alt and title on images
Lack of title where appropriate on other elements

OK, so they're broadly valid markup and they're probably some of the
best implemented sites out there. But these are also the specialists
making a pitch, and even then they can't get it spot on.
I had some recruitment agency spam today.
Ł40k+ to wear a suit in a vaguely sales role.
Ł35k to write bad websites.
Ł22k to write good standards-based websites.

Why is it so hard to find good standards-aware web designers? Because
the market doesn't want them, doesn't reward them, and a typical outfit
will actually punish a competent developer who understands the issues
in favour of a Potatoshop image-slicer.

Saqib, I think you should pick the most impressive developer you can
find at the right price, and then add an external accessibility
consultant (like myself!) to secure the code.

Sadly, there are no (or very few) overall professional web designer,
except perhaps Happy Cog and NetRelations. Most are either graphically,
information architecture or accessibility centered. Rarely all three,
or even two of those.

Sorry. But I think that's the reality you'll have to face.
Sincerely,

Daniel Gr

Not a bad list. The sites are not "strict" XHTML, but I was able to
find few designers who are willing to guarantee that the final product
will be Strict XHTML complaint.... :)

Thanks for the list!!!! :-)

Having a good spam filter to block spam like that: priceless.

I do XHTML 1.1 + CSS 2.1 work. All virtually 100% standards-compliant.
Print-friendly without needing a printer-friendly page. Accessible to
99+% of people on the Internet.

This is how it looks in my browser:
<http://cfaj.freeshell. org/testing/cashcow.jpg>

There is something too small to read on a red background at the
top.

The page does not fill my browser window, which means you did
something to prevent it, as it would be filled by default.

The columns are far too narrow to use justified text; the resulting
spacing looks awful.

The margin between the columns is too narrow.

Newspaper-type columns do not work well on a web page. I have to
scroll down to reach the bottom of the first page and then scroll
back up to read the continuation in the second column.

Hello. I just read a article "rdf in html: approaches" at "http://infomesh.net/2002/rdfinhtml" (guided by google). Looking into the "Embed XML RDF Part II: Embrace Validation" part, there are an example DTD and xhtml page. I don't know much about xhtml Modularization, but I think this example should be workable in cut-and-paste fashion for newcomers to use. In fact I copied the example xhtml file into my website, it won't pass...

Hello all, ive been programming with ASP.NET since it came out, but am just getting my feet with now with v.2. Ive noticed something strange in the way my HTML tables get rendered with 2. I use tables to layout my pages, doing three rows, a header, content and footer. When i do this, i make the tables height=100%, so the footer always shows up at the very bottom of the page. With 2.0/2005 though, when it renders the pages, it doesnt...

A couple years ago it seemed like XHTML was the direction of most web markup, a foregone conclusion. Now I return to the scene and I see many here recommending that authors stick to HTML, albeit in strict mode. What happened? Why the shift? What's the problem with XHTML that has everyone saying it be avoided in most cases? Can I take it that this group seems to think HTML5 is going to be the future direction of the web rather than...
