Presentation Topics Include Web Services, RSS, FOAF, OAI, Open Access,
and More;Special Focus on OpenOffice.org' s Influence on Standards and
New Technologies
Alexandria, Va. - April 20, 2005 - The opportunities and challenges
of "open data" on the Web will be the focus of a new educational
track at XTech 2005, the premier European conference for developers and
managers working with XML and Web technologies. XTech 2005 (formerly
XML Europe) is being held 24-27 May, 2005, at the Amsterdam RAI Centre,
Amsterdam, Netherlands.
"The Web may have first been the battleground for open standards, but
it's now the battleground for open data," says Edd Dumbill, XTech
2005 conference chair. "The democratization of publishing through the
Web presents tremendous opportunities, which our new "Open Data" track
will cover in extensive detail."
In the presentation "Towards a Science Commons," the Executive Director
of Science Commons, John Wilbanks, will introduce Creative Commons'
project for sharing knowledge among scientists, universities, and
industries. In "Open Street Maps and Spatial Data," Jo Walsh,
researcher with the co-author of "Mapping Hacks", will detail a project
to create copyright-free map data for the United Kingdom.
OpenOffice.org will receive in-depth coverage in XTech 2005's
"Applicatio ns" track. In "Using W3C XForms in Office
Applications," Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: SUNW) Software Engineer
Daniel Vogelheim will explain how OpenOffice.org is introducing new
technologies into the workplace, while Sun Technical Architect Michael
Brauer will discuss the new OASIS OpenDocument format.

I have a common (I guess) problem. I need to store my address book in format that would be independent on any e-mail clients - preferably in XML - to work sometimes on raw data. I tried to find something on the Web, however I did not find anything than some data converters and no common non-vendor standard. Does anyone know such XML-based open standard for storing and exchanging contact/address data? Regards,

Hi all, I have to decide on an XML structure going forward. The structure is going to house a large amount of data. In the past I've always just used the philosophy of "when in doubt use elements" - but I just read this article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?URL=/library/en-us/dnexxml/html/xml02212000.asp And there is some indication that you will gain performance benefits from XML that uses attributes rather than...

Hi All, A coworker and I have been debating the 'correct' expectation of evaluation for the phrase a = b = c. Two different versions of GCC ended up compiling this as b = c; a = b and the other ended up compiling it as a = c; b = c. (Both with no optimizations enabled). How did we notice you may ask? Well, in our case 'b' was a memory mapped register that only has a select number of writable bits. He claims it has been a 'C...

Debate Simmering in US Over Regulation of Internet A heated debate is shaping up in Washington about a concept some activists are calling Internet network neutrality, known more popularly as net neutrality. At issue are calls for the U.S. government to regulate the Internet, and, in effect, opponents say, determine which companies get bigger shares of the profits. To read the full text, please go to:...

I'm in a vigorous debate at my work regarding objects assuming knowledge of the type their containing object. This debate pertains specifically to ASP.NET, but I have decided to post in the C# forum because this is where most of the OO gurus hang out, and I view this as a fundamental issue of OO design. In ASP.NET, objects of type WebForm and UserControl have an intrinsic Page property which refers to their containing Page.

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
