borders, blockquotes, and floated images

http://www.web-ho.com/blog/test.html is a model to illustrate the
following problem: The second paragraph ("Sed nec augue ... Fusce nec
massa.") is a blockquote set out with a gray bar with

border-left: 5px solid #ccc;

As can be seen by adjusting the window width so that the second paragraph
is partly to the right of, and partly below the image, the gray bar hides
partially under the image, it is not pushed to the right with the text by
the floated image. Is it at all possible to have the border follow the
outline of the text rather than the maximal enclosing rectangle?

I submitted a variation on this on the Opera forum but I thought I'd bring it up here too as a more general HTML query. Consider this code (I've shown it the old fashioned presentational way but the same problem would happen with CSS): <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html> <head> <title>Changed behaviour in Opera 7.21</title>

Hello. The issue is quite known: you have a block-level container holding a set of floated elements and you need that the container's content height take the floated elements' dimensions into consideration. E.g.: <div class="images"> <div class="image"><img src="example1.png" width="160" height="120" alt=""></div> <div class="image"><img src="example2.png" width="160" height="120"

I created Search.CSS which grabs Google results (using the Web API), displays as XHTML1.0 Strict + CSS, and recently also adds Thumbnails. <http://blog.outer-court.com/search-css/index.php?q=google&css=blog.oute r-court.com%2Fsearch-css%2Fdefault.css> My question, how can I display image-borders only if the image is bigger than 1x1 pixels? Because that's the default served by the Open Thumbs project. So if I display a border around all...

I am trying to make a bunched of left-floated divs that will be contained in a larger div. the floated divs all contain a left-floated img and text of varying sizes. If I don't set a height (or height:auto) the larger div doesn't seem to see the nested divs, and they spill out the bottom. IE seems to automatically resize the larger div as long as I set the height to 100% or any pixel size. Mozilla doesn't recognize the percent, and...

I'm stumped. Would one of you take a look at the following site and help me with two problems: 1. When zooming in, <div id="banner"> is the *only* block that doesn't "expand" to fit the text & image. 2. Viewed in Firefox, Netscape and Opera, the borders for each menu selection don't go all the way across (you'll see what I mean, I hope), though it looks OK to me in IE 6.

I posted a very long message regarding my experiences with JavaScript, one reply was posted asking I post an example of the problem -- and both are gone! Is there a moderator that removes such stuff? In any case, here is the issue in brief: I want to keep the page invisible while my onload script decides how to format it, setting colors, downloads images, etc. The style "visibility:hidden" in the body tag almost does it -- except...

Awhile back I looked into why my blockquotes at http://www.xmission.com/~wake/section26.html weren't validating, and it appeared it was because they were imbedded in paragraphs, and shouldn't have been since apparently that's a block level element inside another block level element. Now I've separated them out separately, and the validator still tells me that's wrong. Is there a nutshell description of how to do blockquotes correctly?...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
