Detect Visitor's Connection Speed

76 New Member
I wasn't sure where to put this but anyway here's the idea and I'm wondering if it's possible. Help would be appreciated but if anyone has done this before regardless I can eventually figure it out I just don't want to waste effort on the impossible.

I want to basically detect a visitor's connection speed when they come to my website in order to determine which "version" to forward them to. I have one that is a little media intense including sound and flash and one that is more tuned toward those using dial up or older PCs that don't want the labor intense one. The less labor intense one will also be the one that can be viewed by mobile web and will work with the page-readers and such for the blind.

The point of all this is that I want to keep the load time down. It's a commercial site and so I need to make sure people don't get annoyed with it but at the same time I need a certain "wow" factor for the general public (hence the media version) so that they'll come to the event.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Usenet, I am currently working on my website and am needing to detect the connection speed of the client. I would like to do this in PHP and not use any other languages. This makes it a bit more complicated. I know it is possiable to do this in PHP but I can't think of how. All I need to figure out is if they are on dial up or not. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate but at least 50% accurate. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Good day, I have a number of threads doing inserts in a table, after which I want to do a select. This means that it will occur that the row that I want to select is locked (by the DB). In these cases, I believe I receive an OperationalError (or is it an InterfaceError?). Is it possible (and if so - how?) to verify that the exception occured because of row locking, so that I can wait and try again?

I connect to the internet through ADSL. I want to write the web page which can detect the connection status with javascript. This detection is like the signal detection in the mobile phone. If the signal is weak, the status may have one squares or zero on the phone. How could I do if I want to detect the status of the network? Thx and Best Regards.

I've been to a few websites where it displays the town, state (if USA), country I'm browsing from. Now, I know that detecting country is easy, but how do you determine the town? What ASP components do this? Thanks, Bill.

Hi. I am trying a csharp sample from http://www.codeproject.com/csharp/socketsincs.asp . (Sorry I didn't post all the source codes here, please get the codes from above link if you want to try). I had some troubles when I started 6 threads (each thread made a separate connection) and sent messages to same server simultaneously. Sometimes, not always, the socket looks like ok, but really it is dead. I don't why it happens.

Here is an advanced PHP question. Can anyone think of a way to detect the number of bytes written to output when a script is aborted? I am sending a large file to the client, and I want to record how many bytes are actually sent. I can detect abort of the script using a shutdown handler. In the shutdown handler, I tried ob_get_length, but it returns false. I tried to read the server's log file, but it is does not contain the...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
