How to retrieve value from php file using actionscript?

hi people how do I retrieve some value from a php file that I have created? do I do something like the code below?

 
var passingurl= mainurl+"passing.php"; //link to pass url

I just ran through a tutorial earlier today, its pretty simple and straight forward:

I managed to read input from a php file though i am having trouble formating the text afterwards. I am pulling names from a sql server and cannot figure out how to have a line break after each name. Also i was hoping there was a way to add style attributes to spesific parts of my data i.e: my data from php is "Hello this text is bold" and i want

Hello this text is bold.

There is a way to set the entire sentance to be bold with actionscript though not individual words. Anyways, hope the tutorial helps you out, if you can figure out any of my questions please let me know.
