More on the design advisor

I am running DB2 8.1.1 on AIX 5.1

Running the db2advis command on a set group of sql statements. They are
taking default values on frequency.

I run the command
db2advis -d scdoltpt -i allclaims_32209 16
and I get a list of 13 suggested indexes. I pick 1 that I think would
be advantageous and add it with runstats and commits being performed.
I run the same command and this time get no recommendations . Ok fine.

Problem is that I run the exact same command and input file 5 minutes
later and again get a listing of 13 suggested indexes.

I am not clear if this is a bug nor expected behavior. If its expected,
is database activity affecting these results?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
Gerry

Hi,
I guess there is something called workload which can be definied for
db2advis. Define a work load and see what happens..

If you don't specify the work load then db2advis is designed to take
the current workload. So the recommendations will vary depending on
work load.

Correct me if i am wrong.

Yes I understand about the workload. However i am feeding it a file
with the queries in it. I keep getting different results. I have taken
to doing a reset monitor command between runs.

Does the next run of db2advis contain all NEW indexes? I.e., does the
recommended list of 13 indexes in the second run contain indexes
that do not exist in your database? It may be the case that the 13
indexes recommended include existing indexes. db2advis is designed
to report new and existing indexes that it found assisted the
workload.

I've got an unpacker that unpacks a 32 bit word into 3-10 bits samples. Bits 0 and 1 are dont cares. For the purposes of perfoming an FFT and an inverse FFT, I cast the 10 bit values into doubles. I'm told: "floats and doubles have bits for mantissa and exponent. (I knew that). If you are subtract bits that partly belong to mantissa and partly belong to exponent, that hardly makes sense. Anyway, looking on bits only, a float has 32...

Dear all, It would be nice if the Design advisor was not outputing all "unused indexes" of the whole database (10000 tables at least), when the workload is only using 4 tables. Why not limiting these "unused indexes" to the 4 tables in the workload ? Best regards,

Does anyone have experience with running the DB2 Design Advisor on huge workloads? I have a workload for a single day for some 132'000 statements in a file. Will the advisor handle this or should I take a sample? Thanks, Peter Arrenbrecht Opus Software AG

Dear all, After FP8 apply on a DB2 UDB multi-partition instance, the design advisor's MQT function is not selectable. From the DB2 Information Center (FP7), there is nothing that suggests that MQTs should not work in multi-partition. Have you encountered this problem (I have tested and got the problem on both Windows and Linux) ? Regards,

Running DB2 8.1.1 on AIX 5.1 When I run the design advisor on selected sql I am getting 'recommendations' for indexes which already exist. I don't understand why this is happening. They are described in the recommendations exactly as they already exist. Relatively new to DB2. Not sure if this is normal but don't understand, yet, why it would be. Thanks

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
