The "DB2 Information Center"
( http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...help/index.jsp) seems to
be an amazing resource and as far as I could tell (after browsing
through various sections of it), this is an all encompassing
monolithic resource which makes all the different manuals (admin.
guide, command reference, sql reference, messages and codes, appl.
development etc.) redundant. Seems like all the information is
available at just this one place.
Am I correct?

I don't agree that the manuals are redundant.
Downloading all the PDF manuals (easy to do with an FTP program) is an
absolute must IMO if you are DBA. If you are just looking up the syntax on a
particular command, then the DB2 Information Center is fine, but the manuals
have more in-depth information and better high level information (including
charts and graphics) on many subjects.
The PDF manuals can be searched with Adobe Acrobat Reader, and the manuals
have "PDF hot links" to other parts of the same manual or to other manuals
(if in the same directory on your PC). The Master Index also works well.

If I look for 'stepwise' nothing found in the publib.boulder only 100% DBA
Messages,
but in the local Installation you find the 'Redistribute stored procedures
and functions'
for running a distribution with stepwise redistribute stored procedures.
Anything missing?

Honestly I never got along with the pre-Stinger Information Center.
In Stinger Informaion Center looks pretty much the same as it does now
on the web.

And, happily, searching on "stepwise" returns the expected result in the
Stinger Information Center (you get your "Redistribu te stored
procedures..." topic as expected).
Looks like the problem was that the topic in question wasn't part of the
table of contents, and the new search technology in the DB2 Stinger
Information Center (and on publib) assumes that if it isn't in the table
of contents, it's not worth returning as a search hit. Leaving that
topic out in DB2 V8.1.4 was clearly an oversight. I would venture that
while the infrastructural shift from the V8.1.4 install to http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2help/ was one major
improvement in 2003, the corresponding shift in the organization of the
information in Stinger (on top of that great infrastructure) is an equal
improvement in 2004.

Well, I won't step into the discussion about whether the manuals are
redundant; everyone has their own preferences for particular formats.
But I will say that the Stinger version of the DB2 Information Center
includes all of the high-level information that you'll find in the
manuals (charts, graphics, etc.). In fact even the current V8.1.4
Information Center on http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2help/
includes most of that information; it's just that it's mostly found
under the "Concepts" section, separate from the "Tasks".
In the Stinger Information Center the high-level information is used to
introduce the task information, giving you a much more book-like
experience. You can see this approach used in the Stinger beta today.

I think one problem people have with the manuals is that they don't know how
to use the Acrobat search function.

Mark, for my benefit (and probably for others), would you be so kind
to tell us what Acrobat search function you are referring to and how
to use it. I have only be using Ctrl-F (and Ctrl-G subsequently) for
searching acrobat documents but I am sure you are referring to
something else more useful.

Another complaint I would like to see corrected. The Information
Center tool is now pretty much useless to me. Does anyone else besides
me remember when information center had a troubleshooting tab that had
all of the messages that may appear as well as SQL error messages. The
Tasks tab also used to have many more useful catergories. Please stop
changing things that are not broke. Besides Information center, I do

It seems the problem discovered in FP8, related to applying FP8 on a ESE +
DOCE installation still exists with FP9.
I was asked to locate the Information Center fixpack, pointed onto my
directory containing FP7 DOCE, and now, the Information Center does not work
anymore. I deinstalled Information Center, rebooted, and re-installed.
