Control center doesn't start

Hi all,

I'm running DB2 8.1.5 on Windows 2000 professional SP4.

When I try to start Control Center, I see the splash
screen for a while, then it closes and nothing else happens.

It happens with "Activity center" (Since I'm running the
italian version, I don't know the
english name of this tool, I mean db2tc.bat).

Where can I find a log in order to understand the problem?

DB2 has several logs and I'm not sure which ones contain information about
Control Center problems. Also, I haven't upgraded to V8 yet. However, if you
use your file system search to look for all files under \SQLLIB that have a
file extension of .log, you should find all the logs. Then, its just a
matter of looking through the last part of each of them until you find
something about the Control Center.

Has this installation of DB2 ever worked for you? I'm not clear if it was
working and then stopped or has never worked.

If it has never worked, I would suspect an installation error. If it used to
work but has suddenly stopped working, it would seem likely that your
environment changed in some way to cause the failure; maybe you could look
at that.

The other thing you could try would be to see what the current logging level
is and increase it if it is too low. Do this at a DB2 CLP prompt:

db2 get dbm cfg | more

Near the bottom of the first page of output, you should see a line that
starts:

Diagnostic error capture level (DIAGLEVEL) = ?

If the value there is less than 4, you aren't at the maximum value. In that
case, you could increase the level of logging to 4 via this command:

db2 update dbm cfg using diaglevel 4

Then issue 'db2stop' and 'db2start' and try starting the Control Center
again. After the Control Center fails again, you should find significantly
more information in the DB2 logs than you had before. Maybe something there
will give you a clue.

If none of that works, try calling IBM Support if that is an option for you.

when,
as I seldom use it, since I prefer command line tools.
The DB2 engine instead works fine.
The diaglevel was 3. After issuing the commands you suggested, now I find

There is an SQL08015 in the third last block of the log excerpt in your
note. According to the Message Reference:

SQL8015N The version of the DB2 Connect product you are using is not
licensed for updating multiple databases in the same transaction.

Explanation: This version of DB2 Connect is limited to working with a single
database in a transaction. It does not support 2-phase commit protocol.

User Response: Upgrade to a full function DB2 Connect product such as DB2
Connect Personal Edition or DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition to be able to
update multiple databases in a single transaction.

This seems like an odd error to get while you are just trying to start the
Control Center and haven't actually selected a database yet. This message
would be more reasonable if you were running a program that tried to access
multiple databases.

The last block of the log excerpt says that APPC initialization failed. I
don't much about APPC beyond the fact that it is a communication protocol
but this may explain why your Control Center isn't doing anything; I think
APPC needs to be working before the Control Center can work correctly. It
also seems quite possible that the SQL08015 is causing the APPC
initialization problem but I can't be sure since I don't know how DB2
Connect interacts with APPC.

My guess is that something in your environment which affects APPC changed
since the last time you used the Control Center. Fixing the APPC
configuration may get the Control Center working again.

Use the Search box in the DB2 Information application to look up APPC and
find out the details about configuring APPC. On my Windows XP machine
running DB2 V7.2, that application is at Start/All Programs/IBM
DB2/Information/DB2 Information. The search box is in the "Search the DB2
Online Information" area near the top of the page that appears when you
click that icon.

If fixing the APPC initialization doesn't help, maybe someone else with more
knowledge of APPC (and DB2 Connect) can suggest something. If not, try IBM
Support.

You can create a trace with the following syntax: db2cc -tf cc.out (I
believe db2tc -tf tc.out should also work). You
might see an error in there which you can interpret but you might also need
to call service.
