Augmenting hyperlink with javascript

I have tried to enhance the functionality of my website by adding some javascript functions to augment my hyperlinks. I have not removed the hyperlink as I am conscious that some browsers may have javascript disabled. So the server call needs to be retained if this is the case.

However, if javascript is not disabled I would like to cancel the hyperlink. Otherwise the link will effectively do the same thing twice; once on the client side and then once on the server side.

How can I disable the hyperlink call, if the javascript function operates properly?

Currently, my hyperlink text looks something like this:
