For being a good web programmer, is a course on data structures
important? It seems php already has built-in functions for what they
teach in a data structures course. On the other hand all universities
seem to teach this class. I tried taking one but just found it too
boring and irrelevant for what I was doing. What are your thoughts?

http://www.JavascriptToolbox.com/bestpractices/
I started writing this up as a guide for some people who were looking for
general tips on how to do things the 'right way' with Javascript. Their code
was littered with document.all and eval, for example, and I wanted to create
a practical list of best practices that they could easily put to use.
The above URL is version 1.0 (draft) that resulted. IMO, it is not a
replacement for the FAQ,...

Our .Net team has just inherited a junior programmer that we need to
get up to speed as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, his skill set
is largely Access with some VB6 and ASP classic experience. We employ
some parts of XP such as pair programming, and this should help. Other
than books, does anyone have any suggestions? His skill set is pretty
antiquated and we need to get him up to speed as quickly as possible so
any suggestions...

Hi,
I feel I'm going around circles on this one and would appreciate some other
points of view.
From a design / encapsulation point of view, what's the best practise for
returning a private List<as a property.
Consider the example below, the class "ListTest" contains a private "List<>"
called "strings" - it also provides a public method to add to that list,

Good afternoon, here I am again with a new bugger of a problem. I'm working on an update for an existing program that uses classic ASP with a good SQL Server backend. The application server is kinda dink and my task lead wants most of the data to be handled on the database end of things. My problem? While I can write the queries of doom I'm kinda new to T-SQL.
Here's the issue. I've got projects, tasks, departments, point of contacts,...

What's the best method for annotating attributes with a docstring?
I'm looking to be able to introspect my class & get the comments back
out.
The technique I'm using is a little hoaky, but works.. basically I
create subclasses of the builtin types that I want to be able to use &
then instantiate them in my attribute assignments. This gives me an
object that I can tweak the __doc__ attribute on. An example of what
my code looks like...

that retrieves the value of the property or the indexer element.
So is the following TestDirectory get bad practice?

My Customers/Sales/Contacts management database interface is modeled
as if Customers are objects, Sales are objects owned by Customer
objects, etc. (I'm running Access 11)
I have Listviews located just about everywhere for the purpose of
finding/acting on these objects.
I want to design a coherent model to handle contextual popup (shortcut
menus) for the different kinds of objects that will be clicked on.
Each object will (naturally)...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
