Could someone who is knowledgable about C please IM me. I'm having a problem
with my C program and have been working at it for like 5 hours, I know it's
something simple.

No, but post your code and question and you never know....

Post a small, compilable piece of code, which shows your problem, along with
a description of the problem, and we will try to help

You have a wild pointer in line 42. Allocate some memory and set the
pointer to it.

I would IM you, but that would require me to sign up with AOL. And I'd
sooner poke my eyes out with a hot pitchfork.

A means for the progressive decomposition a problem space into increasingly simpler component parts such that these component parts represent higher levels of conceptual abstraction, and are completely independent of each other except for their well-defined interfaces. This was an attempt to explain the gist of OOP to programmers accustomed to the structured programming paradigm. I tried to explain OOP in terms of ideals that can be...

Greetings, Is there a consensus as to the best way to report a programming error, for example an out of bounds index value passed to a function? There are three approaches that I can think of: (traditional) error return value error value in object exception

I've been utilising C for lots of small and a few medium-sized personal projects over the course of the past decade, and I've realised lately just how little progress it's made since then. I've increasingly been using scripting languages (especially Python and Bourne shell) which offer the same speed and yet are far more simple and safe to use. I can no longer understand why anyone would willingly use C to program anything but the lowest...

Just finished off a production .NET web application written in c#. I set up a error handler in the global.asax which is triggered to iterate through the error stack and send it and other information to me in an email. This gives me logging and alerting and a record of usage ( by sending time ). After deploying the application I noticed intermittent errors in the Page Load event after the user logs on. I wasn't every user, but the...

Which is best approach? Should Try + Catch be used to only deal with "catastrophic" events (like divide by zero, non-existant file, etc...etc...) Or should Try + Catch be used IN PLACE of regular defensive programming? (ie if file exists do this, if not do something else) Or should Try + Catch be used TO SUPPLAMENT regular defensive programming?

I just stumbled onto PEP 316: Programming by Contract for Python (http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0316/). This would be a great addition to Python, but I see that it was submitted way back in 2003, and its status is "deferred." I did a quick search on comp.lang.python, but I don't seem to see much on it. Does anyone know what the real status is of getting this into standard Python? Thanks.

In my "Happy Christmas" message, I proposed a function to read a file into a RAM buffer and return that buffer or NULL if the file doesn't exist or some other error is found. It is interesting to see that the answers to that message prove that programming exclusively in standard C is completely impossible even for a small and ridiculously simple program like the one I proposed. 1 I read the file contents in binary mode, what should...

Dear folks I'm looking for good sites/material for this topic: Introduction to programming, using Javascript. So, not introduction to programming *in" Javascript. Well, I guess this would be in a way included anyway, but I would like to use Javascript/HTML/Browser as programming environment for pupils who have no idea of programming so far. Any tip would be much appreciated.

Hey I'm not sure if this is where I should be asking this but I'm going to ask anyway. I'm doing an assignment for my Intro to Comp Programming class. This is the assignment: Define a class named PhotoOps. Like you did in your last programming assignment, define the class with a String instance variable named _filename, and Picture instance variable named _picture. Define the constructor so that it accepts a String as an argument;...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
