adding property items to images

I am trying to add a property item tag to a png file. I am using the
setpropertyitem() method. when I inspect the image object before saving my
tag is the last tag in the array. After I save and reopen the image my
property item is gone. Can anyone tell me the proper way to add a property
item so that it will stick.
