This has probably been answered before, but my Google skills have failed
me so far...
Is there an os independent way of checking to see if a particular
executable is on the path? Basically what I want to do is run code like:
i, o, e = os.popen3(executable_name)
but I'd like to give an informative error if 'executable_name' doesn't
refer to an executable on the path.
The idea is to differentiate between errors generated by not being...

I can't make this script work properly. I've gone as far as I can with
it and the rest is out of my ability. I can do some html editing but
I'm lost in the Java world. The script at the bottom of the html page
controls the form fields that are required. It doesn't function like
it's supposed to and I can leave all the fields blank and it still
submits the form. Also I can't get it to transfer the file in the
upload section. The file name...

I would like to hear opinions on the tradeoffs of putting the tables,
forms, and queries for several related datasets in separate databases
vs one combined database.
I am working on an application that will have a number of "subjects".
The subjects have a number of commonalities, but are not identical. I
am hoping that I will discover that the subjects fall into a few
"types" and a common database structure can be used for each type.

What's the point of something like this?
As a php programmer, everything is already there for me, except a
decent client-gui system. I could write php-gtk apps, but they're not
as easy or as portable, html is php's native interface, and so maybe
with some javascript...
Does anybody else get frustrated at how long it can take to learn

Hi,
Is there a UNIX C system command that will let me copy a file?
I am looking for something similar to "cp" that can be called within a
C program.
I know of the "link" system call but this command will set a the
second file as a link to the first file rather than an independent
copy of the first file.
(Windows has the CopyFile command but I didn't find anything that
would work under UNIX)

Hello -
My question involves using a FileSystemWatcher class within threads in a
process. I am starting multiple threads, and launching a method I called
"Start" for each; within each thread, I want to monitor a directory for new
files, using FileSystemWatcher. The OnCreate handler for the FSW will then
process the file. The code works, but the OnCreate handlers are NOT
independent of each other - if the processing of one file takes 30...

Hi there,
We have been looking for some time now for a database system that can
fit a large distributed computing project, but we haven't been able to
find one.
I was hoping that someone can point us in the right direction or give
us some advice.
Here is what we need. Mind you, these are ideal requirements so we do
not expect to find something that fits entirely into what we need

hello,
I (again) wonder what's the perfect way to store, OS-independent,
filepaths ?
I can think of something like:
- use a relative path if drive is identical to the application (I'm
still a Windows guy)
- use some kind of OS-dependent translation table if on another drive
- use ? if on a network drive

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
