We are implementing an ASP.NET application which uses forms authentication
but authenticates using Active Directory in a Windows 2000 domain. (I used
MSDN article 326340 to help me set all of this up.)
I have found that some of my users can log into the new ASP.NET application
just fine, but others cannot. For example, one of my users is Bill and
another is Paul. Bill can log in just fine, but Paul cannot. I went into
Active Directory Users and Computers and took a look at both of them, and I
found that Bill is a member of "Domain Users" and "Providers" (an OU we
have), whereas Paul is a member of "Domain Users", "Providers" and another
OU called "ProvidersMailL ist". So, even though Paul is a member of more
groups, including all those that Bill is a member of, Paul cannot log in but
Bill can. When Paul tries to log in he gets an error that says:
"Error obtaining group names. Object reference not set to an instance of an
object."
(The error is coming from the LdapAuthenticat ion.vb class, I am sure.)
What could be causing these problems?

Great questions for the dotnet folks, but likely not going to be

I have some users cannot fill out the user account information. First page
ask them for a code then the second page ask for the user information. When
they click on continue in user information page, it takes them back to the
default page. I have a if statement "if session(user_name") = "" then
response.redirect ("default.aspx") . Why is the session variables not

I have a couple of lulus here but I'll address the other one in "Queries".
This one pertains to allowing users with read-only access to use the database
whilst a person with admin access is using it. The way it stands right now,
if an admin user is in it the r/o user gets a prompt that the DB is locked.
Bear in mind, I am only allowed to use system security, NOT Access security.

When we want to make updates to our application, we have to make sure all
users are logged out, or they will get kicked out when we copy a new DLL.
Our web application, using the 1.1 framework, we are not allowed to use
