urlwww--domainname SITE THEFT

I help to manage a site that has been copied/stolen on 5 different
occasions from spammers overseas.
The site has over 20,000 pages and is a target for people looking to
steal content to run their own Google or Yahoo ads until they get
caught by me or Google/Yahoo -- then they shut down and move on to the
next website and repeat the process.

This time we caught someone early by watching our raw log files.
I can't post the URL here as we are still gathering evidence and do
not want them to suspect that we know, HOWEVER
I would like some feedback on why these crooks choose to use this URL
format.

http://urlwww--mydomainname--net.theirdomainname.com/

Is there any admin. purpose to using the sub-domain (urlwww)?

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,

I beleive such a format makes it difficult for users to validate links or
web sites. I have seen such links, predomenantly in spam and I assume its
purpose is to deceive users into clicking the links. At first glance an
unsuspecting user would read the url from left to right and unthinkingly
extreact the domain name out of the leading www and com parts.

It would also make it difficult for search engines to destinguish between
the legitimate and fake site. If the search engine is indexing content with
domain name, their algrithims to extract the domain name may be using string
matching to extract the domain name from the www and com parts. Since the
Phishing sites have the same content as your site (check their site for the
existance of robots.txt in the root folder) they may not appear in their
listings with thier contorted domain name. I would bet that they block
spiders from indexing their content.

Visit the Anti-Phishing Working Group for more information
http://www.antiphishing.org/

There are a number of services where you can report suspect web sites.
McAffey's SiteAdvisor.com is my recommendation.

Regards.

Does anyone know a good resource discussing the issues involved in session theft? I've read a couple, but none that really address the problem apart from acknowledging that it is a problem; you just don't seem to be able to do much about it. Does anyone have some tried-and-tested measures for preventing session theft, that aren't already built into PHP? For that matter, what measures _are_ already built into PHP? Are there significant...

Hi, I run a few sites and I want to log in my main site database when/if there is a problem, (like a page not found or an unknown agent). But I don't want to give direct access to my database to the other sites, so how could I safely pass data, (without passwords), from one site to another? Thanks. Simon

I'm sure it must be do-able. I know better than to mention the term "S__dK__ys" in conjunction with this topic. I've read enough in here to know that is extremely unreliable. Am sorry even that I have to use IE...

Hi, As part of a website (ASP.NET) we're creating, we need the ability to store documents with pretty much 'mission critical' security. ie, if the server is completely compromised (eg a trojan/virus is installed or someone physically steals the server) they will still not be able to gain access to the content of the files. I can securely transfer the files to and from the server, but I am unsure of how best to store them securely.

I help manage a large web site, one that has over 600 html pages... It's a reference site for ham radio folks and as an example, one page indexes over 1.8 gb of on-line PDF documents. The site is structured as an upside-down tree, and (if I remember correctly) never more than 4 levels. The site basically grew (like the creeping black blob) ... all the pages were created in Notepad over the last

Is there any way I can limit the access to my website? I have a site "A" and I want to allow access to it only from site "B" login user. If someone try to access site "A" directory, I want it redirected to site "B" for login. After login at site "B", you see the link to site"A". When you click it, you see login page for site "A". Is it possible? Thanks.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
