Database with table naming issues

9 New Member
I am attempting to fix an old Quiz database that someone gave me. When someone takes a test, I want the test to pull 25 random questions. I built the query and used SELECT TOP 25. That works fine. The problem with the RND command is that the person built the table with a space in the name (Question Table). When I try to use the RND command I get an error. I made a copy of the table and renamed it, this allows the RND command to work fine. The problem is that I can't find everywhere this program uses the Question Table and changing the name has caused me errors everywhere else. As you can tell by this post, I am a ROOKIE. What should I do? or does someone have a Quiz database that might work better that I can get a copy of. What this program does that I like is. 1. Logs the test results for the person. 2. Gives a report of what questions they missed. 3. Gives a nice report of their results. Thanks in advance for any help.

First, put the name of the table in [], that will prevent the problem of the space in the name.

What version of Access are you using? In 2003 there is a utility to help, under Tools / Analyze / Documenter. Run that and you should find a lot of the occurrences you are looking for. And there are 3rd party tools to help, just ask Mr. Google.

As Jim says, simply use the brackets ([]) to resolve the entire problem.

I use the ([Question Table[) and it still give the error. If I use the rnd command on a table without the spaces it works fine. But thanks for trying

You used two open square brackets. You need to use one open [ and one close ].

David, this is a very common problem and the solution is not guesswork. This works. If indeed you have simply copied it down wrong as you indicated then it will work when done properly. If not then you can still assume it will work when done as indicated. If something is still not working then it's not related to this.

Sorry everyone, I had a typo. I am aware that you need and open and a close [brakcet]. So to correct my issue. The RND command does not work with ([Question Table]). When I change the table name to ([QuestionTable]) it works fine. But once I change it, it messing up everything else.
Is there a quiz template out there that I can use and modify?

How are you using the RND command exactly David? As I said before there should be no problem with a table reference including spaces as long as the name is correctly surrounded by brackets ([]), so something else is wrong. We just can't tell you what that is because you've shared no more details with us. If you post the code that you're using exactly (No typos; No writing it out again; Just Copy/Paste) we can look at it and try to determine what you're doing wrong.

Is anything else in your database named "Question Table" (with space) ? i.e a query.
Only RND function refuse to work ? What error message you receive ?
