sharing a database on 2 pc's, one vista / one is xp

ARC
Hello all,

This is really a computer sharing / network question, so sorry for posting
here; it's the only newsgroup I post in.

I have a customer with a database file on a vista machine under Users\[user
name]\, who has a 2nd pc with window xp. They're getting all kinds of access
errors relating to the .mdb being read-only, etc., when they try to access
the database from the xp machine.

Using remote control, I turned on sharing for that folder with full rights
on the vista machine, then I connected to the xp machine. Still no luck. As
a test, I opened Notepad, and tried to save a quick .txt file to that
folder, and received "you do not have permission to save in this
directory.."

What's the secret to sharing a folder, with full rights, on vista? Does the
database have to reside in a certain folder? Or do you need to go into the
security tab and somehow add the 2nd user? (the security tab is a mess in
vista, btw)

Thanks!

Andy

(P.S. This used to be much easier back in the day...)

I have converted my Access database into *.mde format. However, my colleague can’t seem to open the file. The message shows that another user has opened it in exclusive mode. However, the file is actually not open at that time. We are connected by server, so she accesses the file through a shared folder located on my PC. I have not set any other security features other than locking my VBA code with a password. Is there any reason that...

The MDB can be opened - 1 user at a time. The MDB Options - Advanced - Default open mode = shared Open databases using record locking is checked

I have deployed few Access apps splitting it in Front End and Back End. Our environment uses Win XP SP2 for clients, Win 2k3 for servers and Access 2003. The max. number of clients is about 50 (concurrent users is estimated around 10). Whilst the Back End always lives on a server, I am not quite clear where the Front End should live. I have searched the web and find contradicting views.

Hi, I am currently trying to get back into ASP and have begun looking at an old webpage I developed some years ago, it was fully functional back in 2002 and I had it up and running with no problems. I have just recently bought a new PC with Windows Vista Home Premium on it and installed IIS. When I try and connect to my data base I get the following error message retunred: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005' ...

A pc that was created in MS office xp's Access 2002 has been working fine on a windows vista Ultimate pc that has MS OFfice Vista Edition. We've got a VB2005 program written some time back that we're trying to do some maintenance on still from within VB2005 but now running on a Vista Business PC (which I think may be relevant to the problem). When we go to start up the project from within the VS environment there are several build errors relating to an inability to find the ADOX library. I can't remember without hours of reorientation and checking back whether this was a...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
