wrong column order after import txt file to Access 2007

5 New Member
After importing a txt delimited file into Access 2007 with adding Couonter
there is a problem with column order. For example in txt file:

John|Doe|25.10. 2007

in new Access table are 4 columns:

Doe|John|1|25.1 0.2007

I need the same column order!
("1" is a Counter and I also need it in the first column not next to the last)

Can anyone help me?
Thanks!

Hi, haniss.

Column order is an issue of table/query layout, you don't need to do anything with import itself. If you want different column order, then just drag-n-drop column to an appropriate position and save table/query layout.

Good luck.

Column order is very important for me, because after some operations with
data in access, I export data back to txt file and I need the same column
order for the other software. Yes, I can do it via query, but I have 125 and
more columns...

Before Access 2007 I used Access 2000. There was everything O.K.

Hi, haniss.

I have Access 2003, so details may differ.

When import text file click button [Advanced...]. It will open dialog where you can change fields' order (as well as many other things). Save the import specification ([Save as ...]). Now you'll be able to import files with the saved specification choosing it from the same dialog window ([Specs...]).

I discovered, that this problem occur only if I add counter. If I import txt file without adding counter, everything is O.K. I can add counter to the new table after importing. H.

@hannis: Thanks for the tip - I have been struggling to find help with this. This was never an issue for me on 2000 and 2003 and my disappointment with 2007 grows by the day.

Sorry to rant but how did MS regress from the fantastic Office 2003 to the tragic Office 2007?!

If you are looking for opinon on what's useful in Access 2007, there's a new article at: http://allenbrowne.com/Access2007.html Covers what's good (useful features), what's mixed (good and bad), what's gone (features removed), what's fixed (old issues solved), what's broken (new bugs), configuration, compatibility, should you buy, and links. It is opinion, so you may disagree, but hopefully it's an informative summary.

Im not a techie but run a small business in UK. We take instructions from clients from emails hard copy, spreadsheets etc and put them on excel templates then import to Access. A client wants us to accept work and report back in 'flat files'. The files are not delimited by a common character but apart from the header and trailer they are of a fixed width (4096 character). The only issue we have with this is that a file can contain multiple...

In Access 2007, I have successfully imported a text file with fixed width fields. However the import did not correctly interpret a date. In the text file the date field had no delimiter, was just MMDDYYYY. This column appears empty in my table. It doesn't seem like this is a hard thing to do. Any suggestions? Marianne

Hi. I have been running an access Database in Office 2003 for a while now. When I upgraded to Office 2007 one of my macro buttons has stopped working. The Button looks up to VBA code to Import a specific Excel spread sheet from a specific location on my hard drive. This file is updated but never re-named or moved so to save time I have created the import macro to do the import steps for me. This has been working fine for me in Office...

Hi, I have an Access 2007 database that contains customer contact information. There are over 8,000 that include name, organization (as a look-up column), email, phone, address, and events that each person should be invited to (also a look-up column). Separate from this is an Excel spreadsheet that contains the some of the same information, with about 10,000 records. The overlap with duplicate names/records is probably about 50%, but of...

First of all, my apologies for originally posting this question in the wrong section. I'm trying to export an Excel 2003 spreadsheet to Access 2007. Column D (START) has the start time and Column E (END) has the end time. I need to calculate the time elapsed between these two columns with the results appearing in column F (TIME). I don't have dates in my Excel spreadsheet, just times: 8:00:00 AM. The result comes out in Column F like this: ...

I am working in Access 2007 and trying to import a .csv file. One of the fields in the .csv file, called Locations, contains numbers with leading zeros and also the last record contains letters. I am importing into a predefined table and the field Locations is set up with Text formatting. When I import my file, the leading zeros are lost and the last record that contains letters is not loaded. The error I receive is “Type Conversion”. I...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
