Visual Studio 2005 and worms

As far as I'm concerned I support the chopping off of fingers of
programmers that put out worms and viruses. I could care less if the
programmer was 5 years old...off with the fingers.

Anyway, I installed Visual Studio 2005 for Office Applications. Since
then I've been getting messages that a worm attack "MS SQL Stack BO" has
been attempted on my system. This link describes the worm.

it's dated January 31, 2003.

Both Symantec and MS are referring to SQL Server 2000. Supposedly this
Visual Studio came with SQL Server 2005, a couple years after this
problem occurred. Is there someplace else I could have SQL server 2000?
Is this a problem of having Access 2003 Professional installed and
then having the newer Visual Studio installed?

Do you have any idea what to do so I can fix this problem of worm
attacks besides keeping my subscription current with Symantec?

I would uninstall everything Symantec (a BIG chore all by itself; as I
recall one must download special software from the Symantec website)
and try other security software. Last time I used Symantec, several
years ago, it was just garbage, being slow, slowing the whole machine,
being awkward and slow to upgrade and awash with false reports. I
think at least one other regular poster here strongly agrees with me.
AVG and Avast are two firms which produce sleek effective security
software some of which they provide for free. After running software
that actually works you may find out if you actually have a worm/
problem. I would bet $2.00 to win $5.00 (5/2) that you don't.

I won't let anything Symantec come near any of my computers, to the
point of refusing to buy new computers which have Symantec trialware
installed.

(Fifteen years ago I loved Norton, but that was before the big
absorption).

I had a similar experience with McAfee. I didn't have a problem with
Norton 2004 but Norton 2006 was a PITA.

After you install VS 2005 and SQL Server 2005 (Express), ensure you
update with VS 2005 Service Pack and there are 3 futher hotfixes
after, for VS. For SQL Server 2005, ensure you update with SQL Server
SP and I think there is one more hotfix.

I said goodbye to Symantec a long time ago. Try AVAST - I like it.

They're both garbage IMO. I can highly recommend AVG - and it's FREE!

From what Lyle, Keith, and you said it appears Norton Anti-virus does
not have the respect I thought it had. Ever since I installed NAV 2006
the bootup time has been atrocious.
