Moved back and front ends - Access 2003

8 New Member
I am a beginner - just to give a warning up front :)
I have a split database on one computer. I need to move the whole database, front and back ends to another computer. When I do, it will not allow me to relink the tables easily. Do I have to change the root path so the front can find the back...and how?? Trying to figure this out for, oh, about 3 days now! Thanks in advance...

The easy way is to use the Relink manager under the Tools/Database utilities/Linked table manager menu.
It can be done by code, but this manager does all needed.

Okay, this is weird. I tried to use the Relink Tables manager since the get-go 3 days ago. It didn't work. It looked like it was relinking it, but it still didn't actually access the back end. It would turn out that when I would open the front end, it said "C://....databasebac kend.mdb is not a valid path."

Then, today, for the heck of it I tried it again. It relinked them just fine. What the heck? Do I have a bug??

Thanks so much for replying, and for giving me the impetus to try it just one more time!!

Sometimes Access does have hickups like this.
It could be a faulty networkcard or other divice. Make sure you have all Service Packs installed and when things like this happen an Office re-install could make sure it's caused by an outside reason.

When installing a .mdb on another PC you should always check the references as they can cause havoc too. Open some VBA code (e.g. a module) and see that there's no checked library under the Tools/References starting with "MISSING".

Success !

Willing to help with one more question???

Have a field "Picture" in a table. I need to change ONE word within the field across all records, but keep all the other info the same. Update query?

Example:

1/owner/123
1/owner/2354
1/owner/5634

Need to change the word "owner" to "me" in the field across all records.

Thanks in advance for the hours you'll save me :)

Is this possible to have the 97 users with 97 front end, 2000 users with 2000 front end, 2002 users with 2002 front end, and 2003 users with 2003 front end all linked up to an access 97 backend? We are currently planning on upgrading workstations with either 2000, 2002, 2003. the criteria for the specific version will depend on the IT department. I would like to know if we have several different office versions will it work to have...

I am not a programmer, but love to dabble with VBA, mainly in Excel, but I have made an Access data base which is getting a bit outa hand for me!! I am using it to display information only; as a project report. I have three sections that I must report on, namely: General information Purchasing issues & Quality issues.

An application I wrote has been deployed on Citrix, and the Citrix admin tells me all users run the same .mde file. There aren't a lot of concurrent users, but even 2 could be cause for concern. I think the use of globals is worrisome in this case. Anybody have any experience with Access on Citrix? (Al Kallal already griped me out about globals, but if he has anything new to add I'm all ears).

Access 2003. I am maintaining 5 almost identical databases (long story). Each of them is split into a back end and front end. While individual maintenance of the back ends is inevitable, I would really like to maintain just one front end that users could use to link to the back end of their choice. The problem is that they would not be comfortable using Access's table-linking function and I would not want them to. I have an Enter Defaults window...

As a warning, I'm self-taught so I have a bad habit of brute-forcing things out of ignorance. I've done some searching online and haven't found a solution, so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask you kind folks if there was a better alternative. PROBLEM I have multiple front ends that are updated on an almost daily basis as needs change (or I find problems). I need an easy way to push out new local copies of the front ends to multiple...

Excuse my noobness. I am managing an access database that is shared by 4 users. Management does not want to use any technologies outside of access for this application (no SQL Server, etc). I have split the database into front end and back end databases and put the front end on each of the users' computers. All users can open the front end simultaneously, but once somebody updates data in the form, the back end locks up. What I...

Hi, My database (Access 2003) is split with the back end on the server and each person with a front end that is linked. Over time the computers/laptops are being replaced and almost everyone is on 2007. I have read some of the earlier posts which advised holding off converting to 2007, but they were old and my first question is - should I be converting the database over? If the answer to that is yes, can I convert the back end, and...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
