How much can Access do?

76 New Member
At what point does one need to use another DB software. I noticed access has a 255 field limitation in its tables and queries. Is this something you find in most Db software?
I new to this access stuff but I've had some training in writing VB, C+, Java, perl, and using windows applications. I'm going to school for a bachelors in Information Systems Security so this isn't exactly my cup of tea. I like Linux/Unix sql much better than Microsoft stuff. It may be hard to set up but once it works, its a beautiful thing.

This can be a rough decision. The beauty of Access is in the cost. SQL Server & others cost ~4,000 and up. One of the reasons to upgrade is if you have a lot of people making transactions on the database at the same time. Are you looking at doing this for school purposes? If so download the free trial of SQL 2000/SQL 2005.

I know there can be reasons why large tables and queries are required but as a rule they should be avoided regardless of what system you are coding in.

Hi, I'm a bit confused ... when would I rather write an database application using MS Access and Visual Basic and when (and why) would I rather write it using Visual Studio .Net? Is it as easy in Visual Studio to create reports and labels as it's in Access?` The advantage of VS.net is that not every user needs Access, right? And that...

I am trying to convince a client that dotNet is preferable to an Access project (ADP/ADE). This client currently has a large, pure Access MDB solution with 30+ users, which needs to be upgraded. Hi What future does access have after the release of vs 2005/sql 2005? MS doesn't seem to have done anything major with access lately and presumably hoping that everyone migrates to vs/sql. Any comments? Thanks
