How can I extract the first name from the full name where each name is
separated by spaces?

Thanks

The full name is stored exactly as FirstName LastName
i.e. "John Smith"?

FirstName:Left([FullName],InStr([FullName]," ")-1)
LastName:Mid([FullName],InStr([FullName]," ") +1)

If all the names are "well-formed," that is trivial, as fredg has explained.

On the other hand, if your names are like the names most of us find, the
problem is a little more complicated.

First names like "Ella May", or "Joe Ed", or "J' Ann", or "De Anne" -- which
may look to you like "first and middle" are often truly "first names" and if
you use it to modify text or address a letter to "Dear Ella" or "Dear Joe",
it may not exactly the opposite of the effect for which you hoped.

Carefully review the names in question and post back here.

Hi! I want to implement a small tool in Python for distributing "patches" and I need Your advice. This application should be able to package all files chosen by a user into a self-extracting.exe so that when you click on it, it will extract the files and run setup.exe which among the other will copy these files into respective folders (the absolute paths could be written in some config file). Of course the files should be extracted first...

Hi, folks. I am writing a Javascript program that accepts (x, y) data pairs from a text box and then analyzes that data in various ways. This is my first time using text area boxes; in the past, I have used individual entry fields for each variable. I would now like to use text area boxes to simplify the data entry (this way, data can be produced by another program--FORTRAN, "C", etc.--but analyzed online, so long as it is first...

Hi, I'm trying to clean up a large database in Access. I have one field for address, which needs to be broken up into Street Number, Street Name, and Street Label (St., Road, etc.) The problem is that the data is very dirty. So some addresses will be standard "456 XYZ Road," while others won't have a number and will just say "XYZ Industrial Park," meaning I can't just use Instr to search for the first space because sometimes the...

First some background... The database tracks Action Items assigned to a group of 20 or so managers. Once the assignment is created it is then emailed to each of the managers that are included in the scope of the assignment. Among the functions that it provides is the ability to embed the source documents in the database using OLE. The user has requested the ability to forward the source document with the email. The embedded documents...

My software program outputs an XML Driving Directions file that I need to input into an Access table (although if need be I can import a dbf or xls) so that I can relate one of the fields (fromStop) and its associated driving directions back to a relational database. I have asked my software vendor for solutions but thus far they have not come up with anything. I am totally unfamiliar with XML so I am struggling with how to do this. I have...

Hi everyone, Yet another syntax problem that's baffling me with templates. I want to instantiate a template with a single parameter as per normal, however the parameter is actually a template class itself, with all *its* parameters filled out (in the form of a typedef.) I can't work out how to break apart the typedef to reveal what data types were used to create it in the first place. Here is some example code that demonstrates the...

How do I extract a surname from a name field in which the name is in the form: <surname, given names>. My first though was to run an update query, but I can't find the function that will give me the position of the comma in the field, so that I can perform a Left() extraction up to the comma. (ie, I'm basically looking for something that gievs the same results as the "search" function in Excel.) I appreciate any help...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
