Repost: Second Database Slow To Open

Original Post:

The following problem started on my PC about a week ago and I can't
link it to any specific change. I'm using Access XP.

If I have any database open and try to open any other database by
double clicking its file in Explorer, it takes about 5 seconds to open.

Previously the second database would open almost instantaneously , as
one would expect on a reasonably fast machine.
However if I have any database open and then open a second instance of
Access by running it from the Start menu it opens instantaneously . If
I then double click any another database file in Explorer it will use
the open instance of Access and open instantaneously .
I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling Access but the problem
remains. If anyone can give me a clue as to what is causing the
problem, and better still how to fix it, I would appreciate it.

Original Post Ends Here.

Since posting this, because of this problem and a few others I have
reinstalled Windows and all my apps including Access 2002 SP3. The
above problem seemed to disappear for a short time but is now back
again. Upon closer investigation, I have found the following:

When I try to open the second database, Access opens immediately, it is
the process of loading the actual file that causes the delay.

The problem is only apparent with mdbs, not mdes.

If I create a shortcut to the mdb that includes the path to
msaccess.exe, the file opens immediately without delay.

Obviously the file association for mdbs is msaccess.exe or they
wouldn't open at all. What I can't understand is why including the
path to msaccess.exe in a shortcut to the file resolves the problem.

Any help or comment is appreciated.

Hello, This is a repost (see under the "dotted" line) from 2 days ago. Hope someone could help. Norton Antivirus 2003 is installed on this computer. Could it cause a problem? Another interesting thing is when I open a email with the DB attached (on the ME computer), the file is not "enabled" in the file list, it's grey. First time I see this.

This is a repost of an item that I still cannot resolve. I have 3 combo boxes. The first leads to the second to the third. When I have selected a value in the second box, the third box shows the available information based on the second combo box selection. But if I change my mind and select a different item in the second box, after the third box has been populated, the third box still retains the information that was previously...

Hi, Sorry to repost, but this is becoming aggravating, and causing me a lot of wasted time. I've got a reasonably large mixed C++ project, and after a number of builds (but not a constant number) linking (and sometimes compiling) becomes immensely slow, and task manager shows that link.exe (or cl.exe) is barely using any processor time, but an awful lot of RAM (around 150-200MB). I'm going to keep an eye on page faults since I can't...

Hello All Repost as didn't get reply ... is there a simple answer to this? I've tried usercontrol and caching sofar to no avail. Is there a way to overcome this problem or not? Thanks, Graeme. When I run my app in Netscape, controls etc appear to be retained on the page during postback sequence so when new info is received after a second or two there's just a small flicker, which is quite acceptable. But with IE6, when I click the...

Out of the blue I have slow queries that cause asp script timeouts and I cannot figure it out. I have moved some test code to other sites on the server and still have these long delays. I have tried dropping the tables, then the database entirely and restoring and still slow. I run the same code on...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
