Help Sharing a database

I have a database in a shared folder, however users with permission can only
access the database in read-only format. What have I done wrong? This is on
Win Xp Pro and Access 2003. Please help.

Thanks.

What rights do the users have on the folder containing the database?
Read only? Can they create files?

did you split the front and back ends and put the fronts on each
machine?

Jul 26 '06 #4
I am sorry, I don't know what that means. Could you break it down please? I
am new at this. Thanks.

Search the help for "split database".

Right-click the database filename in Windows Explorer and go to
"Properties ". Make sure the database isn't marked for Read-Only.

Are you giving full control in Jet security, through Access, or in
NTFS?

Where is the file stored? I recently encountered a situation where
an app was written to place the MDB in a folder in the programs
directory, which in WinXP is restricted to read-only. The machine
had the colossally stupid "simple file sharing" turned on, so there
was no way to change permissions on that folder. Once "simple file
sharing" was turned off, the permissions on the folder could be
changed, and then everything was OK.

Two points:

1. WinXP "simple file sharing" is bloody stupid and useless
(especially since it uses the EVERYONE group to allow literally
EVERYONE to access data in its public shares).

2. creators of Access applications should *never* place their MDB
files in folders under the programs folder.

At my place of work all of the C drive is locked down except for c:\Temp and
the user's profile folders so I have to put my FEs in one of those.

The MDB can be opened - 1 user at a time. The MDB Options - Advanced - Default open mode = shared Open databases using record locking is checked

Hello all, This is really a computer sharing / network question, so sorry for posting here; it's the only newsgroup I post in. I have a customer with a database file on a vista machine under Users\\, who has a 2nd pc with window xp. They're getting all kinds of access errors relating to the .mdb being read-only, etc., when they try to access the database from the xp machine. Using remote control, I turned on sharing for that folder...

Hello everybody! I have just found out that the sharing properties of a single database (mdb file on a network), accessed by 3 users, change depending on the user accessing the database. That is, with the file opened by 2 users at the same time, in my computer, the sharing properties appeared as set to share (not exclusive) and single entry-lock. Nevertheless, in the computer of the other user, the sharing properties are set to exclusive mode...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
