Help Sharing a database - Microsoft Access / VBA

Kissi Asiedu

I have a database in a shared folder, however users with permission can only
access the database in read-only format. What have I done wrong? This is on
Win Xp Pro and Access 2003. Please help.

What rights do the users have on the folder containing the database?
Read only? Can they create files?

Right-click the database filename in Windows Explorer and go to
"Properties ". Make sure the database isn't marked for Read-Only.

Are you giving full control in Jet security, through Access, or in
NTFS?

Where is the file stored? I recently encountered a situation where
an app was written to place the MDB in a folder in the programs
directory, which in WinXP is restricted to read-only. The machine
had the colossally stupid "simple file sharing" turned on, so there
was no way to change permissions on that folder. Once "simple file
sharing" was turned off, the permissions on the folder could be
changed, and then everything was OK.

Two points:

1. WinXP "simple file sharing" is bloody stupid and useless
(especially since it uses the EVERYONE group to allow literally
EVERYONE to access data in its public shares).

2. creators of Access applications should *never* place their MDB
files in folders under the programs folder.

At my place of work all of the C drive is locked down except for c:\Temp and
the user's profile folders so I have to put my FEs in one of those.
