Apple and Access on Windows Peer to Peer

Hello Everyone

I've been asked to develop an Access database solution for a small business
that currently has three Windows (XP) desktops and one Aapple Emac (OSX) on
a peer to peer network. Will the Emac be able use the Access database
database?

Using a Virtual PC product it should work fine. I've seen it work fine at one
of my client's sites.

You have a couple choices with the EMac. Use Virtual PC--about $250.00 for
each copy. Use Remote Connection, an implementation of Terminal Services
for Mac OSX. Use a FileMaker Pro front end connected by ODBC to your Access
back end. I haven't priced FileMaker Pro lately so I don't know how it
sizes up to VPC. Either Remote Connection or VPC will give your EMac a
Windows desktop upon which your Access database can run. The difference is
in which machine does the heavy lifting of running the Windows session. In
VPC a complete hardware emulation of a PC is done and the operating system
is installed as if it existed on a real computer. Windows and any
applications running in Windows believe they are running on a PC that the
user can reach out and touch. It is of course, an emulation and not a
physical computer. Because it is an emulation performance is affected by
the capabilities of the host machine to run the emulation. Performance is
never what it could be if that instance of Windows and associated
applications was running on a real PC. But it is good enough to get by. In
Remote Connection the host server does the heavy lifting of hosting that
Windows session so you have a desktop that is run by actual hardware but is
not physically located on the client machine. No worries there as long as
you have a fast, dedicated network connection to the host machine. I can't
make a recommendation because I don't have enough of the details about your
application and how it is used, etc. But if your users expect to be
disconnected from the host network a good chunk of time then VPC is probably
the best option. FileMaker will mean some custom development to build
another front end. Remote Connection needs a Terminal Server to connect to.
I've used & owned VPC in the past and was very impressed. If you can swing
the cost of a licensed copy, I'd probably buy VPC for the EMac.
