What's the simplest method to install a runtime database app across the web?

MLH
I have about 12-13 files. All can go into a single directory.
And I need a desktop icon created to launch the app. Is
making the app available for web-based installation quite
difficult. What tools are used to do that?

Are you talking about installing a few mde files, or the actual runtime?

The runtime in a2000 can be up to 150 megs in size.

For a2003..it is about 34 megs + your size application (compressed).

So, I suppose you could deliver something via the web..but for anything but
high speed, I don't this very workable.

The runtime has provisions for putting a shortcut on the desktop (you
mention 13...do you really want 13 icons put on the desktop?).

I mean, once the runtime is installed and setup, then you just need to give
your uses the mde files. To update via the web, I generally just use WinZip
(www.winzip.com) to zip the files and the users can download and un-zip the
files.

The a2003 does use the standard MSI installer, and some utilities on the web
can re-package a MSI to"install" from the web, but given the very large size
of the runtime..I would likely split this up into two parts. Only the
"first" application needs the actaully large runtime package included..the
rest of the files will then simply run when copied to the pc (thus, winzip
is useful here).

Thx for reply, Albert. I see lots of your helpful posts to
this newsgroup.

Am talking about 5 megs of stuff tops - uncompressed.
That's not too big a load, I don't think. Does that help?

Several months ago I started a thread with the title "What is/is not considered to be good OO programming" which started a long and interesting discussion. I have condensed the arguments into a single article which can be viewed at http://www.tonymarston.net/php-mysql/good-bad-oop.html I fully expect this to be the start of another flame war, so sharpen your knives and get stuck in!

I have a script used to find and run Java on a Windows system.  It worked fine on original tests (on a Windows XP system).  It's now running on a Windows 2000 (sp3) system, and it won't work -- the problem is this line: set oCommand = WshShl.Exec(sCommand) (it's about halfway down)  Is there a problem with the Exec method in some versions of VBS?  Is the problem Windows version I'm on, or is it something more obvious that I'm just not...

I have a ASP.Net web application that has two assemblies that run under com+. Under Windows 2000 the two assemblies are added to com+ automatically when instantiated from the web site. For this to happen we had to change the context in which asp.net runs from machine to SYSTEM by modifying the machine.config file. Under Windows 2003 no matter how asp.net is set to run as either machine or system. I get the following error: ...

This is very strange and disturbing. Last night I opened the FE of my development version of an A97 database and immediately received a Windows-level error message titled "msaccess.exe Application Error". The message body was along the lines of "... instruction 0x6517daaa referenced memory at 0x00000075" etc. The dialog box has an OK and Cancel button. OK terminates the Access environment entirely. Cancel launches a dialog box titled...

I have stumbled across various Netscape issues, none of which appear to be solvable by tweaking the clientTarget or targetSchema properties. At this point, I'm not even interested in "solving" these problems - I'm more interested in isolating them, .i.e. finding a "complete" list of issues. Here's my list of serious issues found so far. By serious, I mean functionality that fails, as opposed to much less serious (albeit annoying) display...

Dear Colleagues: I feel that the dumbest questions are those that are never asked. I have been given the opportunity to get into .NET. To begin with, my background is not that of a programmer, but a systems engineer and the closest I have come to "programming"...

In a thread about wrapping .Net applications using Thinstall and Xenocode, it was pointed out that there may be better programming languages/IDEs to use for the purpose of creating standalone, single executable apps. My goal is to create desktop applications for use on Windows XP+ OSs that are distributed as single executables that do not require traditional install packages to run. I would like to use a drag and drop UI development...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...
