2002 Developers addition

Hi
I use access 2002. Is there an addition of Access2002 that allows you to
use your database on a computer that does not have access. If so, is it
still available and what is the name of it, is it hard to learn? I know
books on more advanced topics are usually hard to find.

Doubtful as MS is now selling the A2003 version. However you may be able to find it
on eBay and such. Note that folks on eBay have been known to sell copies of
software.

No. It's mostly wizard driven so you crank through the prompts. There are problem
especially if the user already has a version of Access installed on thier system.

Yes, it is called Microsoft Office Xp Developer. It comes with a Packaging Wizard which leads you step by step to package your
database. One of the options is to include Access 2002 Runtime. The package can then be deployed (using a setup.exe) on a user's
computer.

I know some members of this newsgroup do not recommend database deployment using the package and insist that there users (clients)
purchase a full copy of MS-Access. I personally have used it successfully. I do have a twenty step procedure to prepare my database
before using the Packaging Wizard. A word of warning, the last time I used the Wizard, it was the 13th package that worked. I wrote
out detailed steps this time so it won't take me so long the next time.

There are a couple of drawbacks to using the Runtime:
MS-Access Help is not available.
You cannot compact the database when the database is open, although you can setup the database to compact when closing or compact it
using a desktop icon (the packager can setup this shortcut for you).
You cannot compile the code, therefore, if the database gets corrupt you cannot use the /decompile switch command line option and
then recompile the code when the database is open as with the full version.

Can you separate the runtime from your mde file, so if you need to update
your mde you don't have to re-package it with the runtime?

Yes, you can. You can distribute only the new FE MDE if you wish.
