Intranet/Network

What is the difference between an intranet and a network? Can a split
database be put on an intranet?

Thanks!

Intranet is a bit of a red herring, it's simply something that looks
like the internet but on a LAN, whether you can put a split database on
one depends if there's a server with a share accesible by the
workstations with enough bandwidth.

Access does not play over HTTP.

A computer network is a group of machines connected together. There are
Local Area Networks (LANs) made up of machines that are local to each
other, like a company's network on one site. There are also Wide Area
Networks (WANs) that are made up of machines on more than one site. The
sites may be connected by a dedicate private line or they could be
connected via the Internet, if so they may well be called Private
Virtual Networks (PVNs).

The Internet is the network of networks connected toegther. There is
only one so it gets a capital letter. A lot of people confuse the
Internet and the World Wide Web, because they mainly use the net for
browsing web pages. That confusion has spread a bit further now. An
intranet is properly a private network of computers connected together.
But it has come to mean specifically a private web server only
accessible to computers within an organisation. For many organisations
it has replaced the company newsletter.

There's another term, an extranet. This is a semi-private web server
that is accessible by people within an organisation and selected people
outside it. Typically an organisation will allow its trading partners
access to specific web pages. For instance customers may be allowed
access to a web server that has pages for them to place orders and to
track the progress of existing orders.

I would like to obtain encypted data over a network in real-time. The nature of the data and process is as follows... A physical hardware device is located at some remote location. When the sensor gets activated, it must notify an operator at a remote facility within seconds (probably no less than 2 seconds). The device is attached to some computer system by a network and will transmit various types and amounts of data once the device is...

I am coding a .NET 2.0 application that needs to be able to run from a network share (intranet), but the security settings does not allow me to do this by default. How can I - in the installation program or by manual intervention afterwards - grant FullRights to the program? The program consists of three modules: WinEXE - a plain Visual C++ 32-bit .EXE file

hi, We are trying to figure out a way of detecting any incoming http request, to our ASP.NET 2.0 application, if it is coming from our internal network (intranet) vs from outside of our network(internet). We can get the client machine's ip from the http request, but is there any way of validating if the ip is a intranet ip vs. an internet ip? Our intranet is pretty large, spans over a WAN with multiple subdomains. Any information/pointer...

Is it possible to hide images from the internet, and only have a image available for users that are logged into the intranet? I am hoping to avoid a database-solution as the number of images will be to many for my database-size. Looking forward to your reply.

Hi all, This is a bit off topic I suspect, but I was hoping that most of you would know the answer... I want to have my IIS prompt for username/password credentials when a user browses to the site externally, ie, not on my own network, but if they are on the network (they would have already logged onto the domain) then they should not be challenged.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
