Permissions of Access databases change when "compacting "

Hello,

Currently I am running an Access database on a windows WTS server,
running Microsoft Windows 2000 server 5.00.2195 Service Pack 3.
This database should be accessible for everybody in our network, so
for the time being, I have changed the permission for the .mdb file to
Everone -> Full control (I know this is not professional, but I'll
sort out the security issues later).
When this database is opened, and closed again, it is automatically
compacted, which is not a bad thing, since the database is fully
emptied and rebuild on a daily base, and since quite a few temporary
tables are used.
However, I have one major problem : if the database is compacted, then
the permissions on the .mdb file change.
The Full control is removed for everyone, and only the Administrators
/ SYSTEM, and the user who compacted the database still has access to
the database.

My questions :

1. How can I deactivate / Activate the automatic compacting of an
Access database when the user quits.
2. How can I prevent that permissions are removed, when compacting the
database (I already tried to deny the "change permissions + Take
ownership" permissions for "Everyone", without any success.

Any other idea's.

Thanks

Hi Peter,

AIUI, "compact on close" is a menu item (I'm still on A97 so I'm not sure
where).

As for file permissions, when an mdb is compacted, all objects are imported
into a new mdb which is then given the name of the donor mdb, the donor is
then deleted, so it looks like the new mdb is inheriting the permissions
from it's parent folder. I think you'd have to change the permissions on
the parent folder to suit.

Hi Keith,

Thanks for yr quick answer.
Sorry I did not mention this in my original message, but I already gave
"Full Control permissions" to Everyone on the parent directory as well,
and I checked the box :

"Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object".

No success however.

Peter

If you mean "Full Control (All) (All)" on the folder then I'm not sure, but
it's worth checking that the second set of brackets shows "All" as this
indicates permissions on the contents of the folder.

Keith.

I am designing an Access 2000 database on a computer running Windows 98. I have one form with several tabs; all of which have sub forms, some with a subform on a subform. For example, on my main Job form I have a tab for PO's to keep track of all purchase orders pertaining to a specific job. The first subform is for the PO numbers related to the jobs on the main form and the next subform is for all of the PO lines for each PO. ...

We were testing a version of our app that's been running for months with no problems and it started throwing "Object no longer exists" messages on two machines in the test environment. We tried the same test scenario on a production box: no problems. Tried them on my developer box: no problems. In each of those two cases, the PC's were connected to the same test server and *supposedly* had the same production build image on them. ...

Hi, Ive got 3 forms, (a subform within a subform within a form) and when I refresh the outermost form, Access closes and offers to send an error report. The forms worked fine a few weeks ago, but now they cause this error in Access 2002 (Access 2000 is fine) Each of the sub forms use values from their parent forms to produce results.

I have a strange problem that has reared its ugly head in the last few weeks. I have the option "Compact on Close" (Tools, Options, General tab) enabled on my development machine. I did this because every time I worked on my app it just grew and grew. What started out as a 14Meg file kept growing into a monster of over 90 Megs! System info: Windows XP Pro with SP1

Good day, and thank you in advance for any assistance. I'm having trouble with something that I'm trying for the first time. Using Access 2000 - I want to run a function either on the click of a button or on leaving a text box. For the immediate task, either will work as well as the other. I think. I'm just at the beginning of this, and the form has two text boxes - Text0 and Text1. The user input to Text0 is a dollar amount, in...

To comp.databases.ms-access -- I just discovered, to my more than mild dismay, that some tables in my Microsoft Access 2003 database have duplicate numbers in the "AutoNumber" field. (Field Size is set to "Long Integer", and New Values is set to "Increment".) I know that an old version of the Jet database engine can cause this problem, but my version of msjet40.dll is 4.0.8618.0, which is supposedly bug-free in this respect. I am...
