unable to sort tables in Access 97

Hello,

I am a just-beyond-beginning user of Access 97 on a Windows 98se
machine (a single, non-networked home machine). All of a sudden I am
unable to sort any of my tables. I click on any random heading to
select the column, but the A\Z and Z\A buttons in the toolbar stay
grayed out. This happens for any column on any table. I even created
a test table since I first noticed this problem, but it also is not
sort-able. I haven't changed or added any hardware and the only
software I've loaded recently was a CD Label maker program. I even
uninstalled that but nothing changed. I also tried reinstalling
Office through the Control Panel's Add/Remove icon, but still nothing.

Any ideas on what has happened? I appreciate any help offered.

Are the fields you are trying to sort, Memo fields? You can't sort
these.

No, none of my tables even have a memo field. The majority are text
fields, with a sprinkling of currency and date/time.

I also use Access 97, but with Windows 2000, and it's at work on a
network. I've never tried to sort my tables. Instead I sort with
queries, either to find or pull data or on forms. I have subforms
that are on queries so I can sort the displayed records by the date
fields. This has worked fine so far and each table has more than
20,000 records.

I wonder if there's a limit of records that can be sorted in a table.
Maybe if so you have too many records to sort. You could try copying
a few records - say, 10 - into a test table, and see if it's
sortable.

Cheers,
Julia

I was experiencing this in one of my databases a while back. I can't
remember exactly what it was I found was doing it, but it was some option I
set in tools|options. Record locking? Have you played with anything in there
lately?

Julia,

I guess I should amend my first sentence from "just-beyond-beginning
user" to beginner user! I don't query or use forms or anything beyond
tables. I am a list fiend and Access is what I use; e.g., a list of
movies and the date I saw them. I would click on the title column,
then the A/Z sort button to alphabetize the names of the movies or
perhaps the date column, then the A/Z sort button to see what movies I
saw in July 1999.

None of my tables are anywhere near 20,000, but even a small one of
less than 30 can't be sorted, and I had this problem on every table
with every column no matter what the size or data type.

Jeremy,

From what I've picked up in Help, record locking is for DBs on a
shared network and it controls what happens if two or more people are
working on the same DB at the same time. Since my tables are all
alone on my home machine, I never fooled around with that. I don't
recall changing ANYthing in options for a long time.

BUT!!! Now wouldja believe the problem has disappeared! As suddenly
and mysteriously as it appeared! I guess the stars aligned and I ate
my Wheaties and I fixed all my broken mirrors because things seem to
be back to normal. Thanks everybody for your interest in my problem.

I have a database containing my own tables and data and I wanted to be able to query this against an accountancy program which has an ODBC driver. This was never a problem with MS Access and Jet but I hit Jet's limitations and have moved to SQL. Creating my own SQL database was no problem, but I was unsure of the best way to be able to be able to have my SQL tables and my accountancy software tables appearing in the same Access front end....

Let me start by saying that, yes we know v6.5 is no longer supported by Microsoft and that moving to SQL2000 might resolve our problem. Actually the migration to SQL2000 is 1 to 2 months out and in the QA phase now. Unfortunately we need to resolve the current 6.5 issue now as it heavily impacts a major revenue stream for the company with every outage we encounter. The Problem: At least once every 24 hours the SQL Server begins...
