I also use Access 97, but with Windows 2000, and it's at work on a
network. I've never tried to sort my tables. Instead I sort with
queries, either to find or pull data or on forms. I have subforms
that are on queries so I can sort the displayed records by the date
fields. This has worked fine so far and each table has more than
20,000 records.
I wonder if there's a limit of records that can be sorted in a table.
Maybe if so you have too many records to sort. You could try copying
a few records - say, 10 - into a test table, and see if it's
sortable.
Julia,
I guess I should amend my first sentence from "just-beyond-beginning
user" to beginner user! I don't query or use forms or anything beyond
tables. I am a list fiend and Access is what I use; e.g., a list of
movies and the date I saw them. I would click on the title column,
then the A/Z sort button to alphabetize the names of the movies or
perhaps the date column, then the A/Z sort button to see what movies I
saw in July 1999.
None of my tables are anywhere near 20,000, but even a small one of
less than 30 can't be sorted, and I had this problem on every table
with every column no matter what the size or data type.
Jeremy,
From what I've picked up in Help, record locking is for DBs on a
shared network and it controls what happens if two or more people are
working on the same DB at the same time. Since my tables are all
alone on my home machine, I never fooled around with that. I don't
recall changing ANYthing in options for a long time.
BUT!!! Now wouldja believe the problem has disappeared! As suddenly
and mysteriously as it appeared! I guess the stars aligned and I ate
my Wheaties and I fixed all my broken mirrors because things seem to
be back to normal. Thanks everybody for your interest in my problem.
