Are there any benchmarks on how much an extra, unneeded VARCHAR, CHAR,
INT, BIGINT, TEXT or MEDIUMTEXT slows down a database call with MySql?
PostGre info would also be useful.
I'm trying to explain to some friends the utility of making database
calls return only needed data.
As an example of what I'm talking about, suppose we had a database
table sort of like this:

I have some code that dynamically creates a database (name is @FullName) and
then creates a table within that database. Is it possible to wrap these
things into a transaction such that if any one of the following fails, the
database "creation" is rolledback. Otherwise, I would try deleting on error
detection, but it could get messy.
IF @Error = 0
BEGIN
SET @ExecString = 'CREATE DATABASE ' + @FullName
EXEC sp_executesql @ExecString

Greetings,
I have to admit that I'm still a beginner in the database field, but I'm
actively studying, and this is why I will be utterly grateful for the
proper, accurate, and wise guidance to the right direction or specific
paths of database studies.
I simply want to make my first major database project a "personal
knowledge database" or a "personal encyclopedia", so to speak. By this I
mean that I want to gather diverse,...

Hi,
I'm currently implementing a database with a tree structure in a table. The
nodes in the tree are stored as records with a column called "Parent". The
root of the tree has a "NULL" parent. The path to each node is stored in
the column "Path" and is of the form "\000001\000002\000003\" etc. The
latter enabling me to fetch subtrees using the "LIKE" predicate. I also
have created the relation "ID" <-> "ID_Parent, effectively the...

I need to import a spreadsheet into an Access table. The spreadsheet has
performance for mutual funds for various periods. The problem is that if
there is no info for a particular period, the spreadsheet contains a dash in
the cell (for example if the fun is only 4 years old and I look in the
columns for 5-year and 10-year performance).
I cannot change the dashes to blank with a global change, the negative
numbers would lose the...

Yesterday, Slashdot profiled the new Open Office 2.0 BETA with what was
referred to as an
"Access-like application." That "Access-like application" is HSQLDB
(misidentified as hSQL).

Ok, I'm baffled...
I'm making a query in access 97 between 2 tables. There is a field in
both tables called "DWGNO".
OPENORD has a record with a DWGNO of "00000012345"
DIEDATA has a record with a DWGNO of "12345"
I'm not doing this with VBA right now. I'm doing it through the query
gui.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
