Database client communication

Hi,

I am new to database development so my question may seem
trivial. Here is the problem: I have an MS Access database
file which can be updated by more than one client
application (more specifically, one of them is MS Access,
another is Web browser running an ASP document and the
third is some COM object written in C++). If one client
application updates the database, all other client
applications need to refresh their status immediately
(say, update GUI). Local database experts assured me that
there is no simple or built-in solution for
notifying database clients of the change in database.

I've seen at least one posting here from a person who had
similar problem (he solved the problem by sending UDP
messages). This solution, however, is quite low-level and
only works for code you have control over. I am sure other
developers faced the very same problem in the past. The
question is, what is the common way to create a communication
channel between database clients? The best I could come up with
is creating a singleton COM Automation object, embed it in every
client application and use it as a synchronization entity.
Thanks,

Vitali

How do you folks get a reliable and complete brief of what is required before development starts? OK, so this is partly down to me not...

Let's assume a web application (in this case a browser-based game) with a custom HTTP server built on PHP, and a client also built on PHP. The client uses the server to access and change data. Even if the client server communication is not directly visible to the user (who logs into the client), the fact that the server is publicly accessible...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For...
