I am trying to learn Dot net - I downloaded a few samples from
internet and when I try to open a project, my Visual Studio 2002
complains that it is Unable to read project file because it was
created with newer version of Visual Studio.
I would think, visual studio 2002 should be backward compatible with
Visual Studio 2002 so we can save and open files across two without
problems. Am I missing something here?

Does anyone have any knowledge of when version 4 will be released? I
think that version 3 was finalized in 1999 and it would be really nice
to have the class keyword and statically typed variables.

Some questions on mixing and matching versions of 'Studio today.
If someone builds an application (say, a Class Library) in 'Studio
2002, can this be used (/without/ applying Policies) in a '2003
application? Will the same principle(s) apply to future versions of

We currently using VS1.1 for our web apps (C#) and the app seems to be up
and and down quite regularly on production and we're not quite sure why. Our
techies told us that because we're (developers) using the wrong version of

There are several posts out there of how to automate excel from .net, i.e in
the sample below, they are using Excel 9.0... However, on my machine, I have
12.0... no big deal.. I see both in the post below, and on my machine, there
is also a 'Microsoft Excel 5.0 Type Library'. Is it best to use this

I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
