file open error between Windows XP & Server

553 Contributor
Hi all

I have Win Xp installed in one partition and Windows Server 2003 in another partition.

I have opened a Word document in Windows Server and when i tried to open the same document from Windows Xp , i got message that this document will open read-only or i have to save the docuemnt with another name if i want to write on it

Similarly, from XP, when i try to perform some other tasks like connecting to internet, etc i get a message that some other program is stopping these actions to be performed - its obviously Windows Server - because it has been happening since i installed Window Server.

Can anyone explain why windows Server that is intalled in differen partition has made such changes to the file that the document won't open normally in win XP?

How can i make the Word file to open normally in Win XP

Regards
Qi

Two days is quite a small time for that to happened it again automatically.
I will tell you how to make it happened manually, then u will know reason and solution for it automatically.
1. Start your XP session
2. Open the files in MSWORD and work on it, copy some large amount of data to some pages.
3. Crash down / HANG (or use any ways of improper shut down) to close XP
4. Start win 2000 and try to open that same files.

NOW: YOU MAY COME BACK SAYING YOU USED TO CLOSED DOWN SYSTEM PROPERLY BEFORE SWITCHING TO THE DIFF OS.
In that case you might have changed the RIGHTS on folder containing those files and have given "everyone" full rights now.
If there were no full rights to "everyone" and u have NTFS FileSystem your users from 2k will not allowd to open files created by ur users from XP and vice versa.
