How to disable Windows XP Administrator password or Log in Automatically

I forgot how to fix this, so i was wondering:

how can i get my computer (WIN XP Media Center SP2) to auto select my user account at the logon screen? I only have one account setup with a password.

I want it to be auto selected so at startup i can just type my password and not have to click it and type my password.

It was like that before but then it stopped.

Thanks in advance.

That would be Control Panel|User Accounts| (third button) "Change the way users log on and off". I have mine set with no check marks (log me in with password only).

Well, I'm not sure that an option without a registry tweak. I'll check the "Hacking Windows" reference book.

You could try bootskin or LogonStudio. They're free, developed by startdock.

I found it! Get TweakUI from M$'s PowerToys page. It's on the right hand side after you scroll down a bit.
In there go to Logon|Autologon.

Have fun!

You could use regedit but that doesn't ask for a password

True, but nobody has been able to figure out which key to set. If you have info, we'd love it. Thanks.

Alright this is the code. It can also be used as a hack. Please dont use it as a hack and i take no responsibility with what you do with it. This is regedit code

REGEDIT 4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"AutoAdminLogon"="1"

You can replace the numbers.

I havn't tested it cause i hate working with regedit seing i can break my computer so be careful

Thank you for the information. You are absolved of all responsibility by your statement "I havn't tested it". That's just what I tell our members.

Hi,

I have a Windows XP box with me. It has only 2 users Administrator and Guest.
I want my Windows box not to prompt for login on reboot, it should just login as Administrator on every reboot with out human interaction.

When i remove password for user Administrator (keep it blank) then i need to click on OK button on login prompt but i dont want to do that also. The Windows box should just login as Administrator on every reboot without prompting/expecting any inputs.

Thanks & Regards

Follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, and type control userpasswords2.
Uncheck the "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer" check box.
Click Apply.
Enter the user name and password you wish to automatically log on with, and then click OK.
Click OK again and you're all done.
**remember now anyone can turn your computer on and see everything.

Some alternatives were posted earlier, but this one is missing from <EDIT: Merged Threads>. So I'm going to cross link them.

Thanks for the tip, buddy.

You're right. It's better to merge. I tweaked the title a little to get the full meaning of the thread (the reason I had tried the links in the first place).

Thanks.

try this;
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\Winlogon
3. Using your account name and password, double-click the DefaultUserName entry, type your user name, and then click OK.
4. Double-click the DefaultPassword entry, type your password under the value data box, and then click OK.

If there is no DefaultPassword value, create the value. To do this, follow these steps: a. In Registry Editor, click Edit, click New, and then click String Value.
b. Type DefaultPassword as the value name, and then press ENTER.
c. Double-click the newly created key, and then type your password in the Value Data box.
If no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows XP automatically changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon registry key from 1 (true) to 0 (false) to turn off the AutoAdminLogon feature.
5. Double-click the AutoAdminLogon entry, type 1 in the Value Data box, and then click OK.

If there is no AutoAdminLogon entry, create the entry. To do this, follow these steps: a. In Registry Editor, click Edit, click New, and then click String Value.
b. Type AutoAdminLogon as the value name, and then press ENTER.
c. Double-click the newly created key, and then type 1 in the Value Data box.

6. Quit Registry Editor.
7. Click Start, click Restart, and then click OK.
