Perhaps you are blocking cookies from their site. M$ is bad about telling you that they were blocked and need cookies to proceed.

Hope that does it for you.

Go to the Tools menu. On IE you want "Internet Options" on FF it's just called "Options". On the Privacy tab: IE Cookies->Sites button is the control; FF Cookies->Exceptions. If you see that the site is listed and blocked, just delete it. That should do it.

Which browser are you using?

Here's a better question... Have you had regular updates and been authenticated while downloading from M$?
