What is the brand name of the HDD enclosure you are using?
There is nothing on that product except IDE-HDD, this is usb connector to hdd, if i connect laptop hdd in that device led glows but it's not detected in my computer and in device manager it's showing driver is not installed for this device. I din't get what will be the exact reason, i changed the drive letters and then checked whether any conflict like that, but it's not solved.....
plz try to solve this problem because my mam challenged with me....

Sounds like the drive enclosure is busted.

Does the usb to HDD connector look like this? Follow this link
If so the site says you don't need drivers as they are built in, try using a different usb and uninstalling the device from the device manager following a restart, also while plugged in try searching windows update for drivers.

By the way you have posted the same question a while ago at the following location .. Thread Link

So you are saying it works in other computers but not the one that you use?
Let me know, thanks.
Cyber
no, it's not working in any pc, in device manager in "usb" it's showing but it's not showing in my computer or "hard disk" in device manager( my question is that if it detected means we should get other drive letter in my computer right because it's a hardisk) one more thing is that, led is blinking in that device that means that device is getting power then what about data.....
thank you for ur great support....

To reiterate, your enclosure is broken. It does not work.

I'm bumping this thread because I have the same problem. I've done quite a bit of research on this and it's a fairly widespread problem, but all of the solutions I've found so far are a bit beyond my technical abilities.
The most simple solution seems to be to replace the enclosure. I'm a bit worried that if I try this I'll lose my data. I looked at several enclosures at online stores and they all seem to be really big compared to the one I have for my WD Passport. These enclosures seem like they're meant for internal drives that people want to convert into external drives. Can I use these to convert an external to an external?
Can anyone walk me through this a bit? I'd really appreciate it. The data on this hard drive is very important to me and it is not backed up.

I have a Seagate 100GB external usb drive and I mostly use Windows XP. Recently I wanted to unplug the drive and Windows refused permission several times. In frustration I just unplugged it anyway. I didn't want to reboot to clear the problem. The next time I plugged it in I got the Cypress driver error. I can't remember for certain now but it was the less popular version, RC58 I think. I then started searching the internet for explanations and solutions and found several pages like this one. It looked like I was in for a lot of work. My PC is configured to dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 7.04 so I thought I might as well see what linux would make of the faulty drive and rebooted into Ubuntu. Ubuntu mounted the drive perfectly without comment and when I tried it again so did Windows. Maybe I was just lucky or maybe Ubuntu fixed it, but I think it's worth passing on the idea in case it helps other users. I would expect any recent linux live CD would be appropriate.
