Failed to access NTFS encrypted file after reinstalling XP

3 New Member
I am a PC user with little technical knowledge. I will be very thankful if you please go through the problem given below and give a solution.

Problem
The File system of the hard disc was NTFS. The OS was in partition-C and some encrypted JPEG image files was in partition-D. It had 2 users. The user ‘Administr ator’ encrypted those files. As the computer was gradually becoming slower and some programs were causing problem partition-C was formatted and the OS was reinstalled. Then it was found that those encrypted files in partition-D can not be opened anymore.

Information about the PC
Stand alone PC with no network or internet connection
OS : Microsoft Windows XP Professional
OS version : 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
Processor : x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~2259 Mhz (Intel Celeron D)
Motherboard : ASRock P4i45GV
BIOS Version/Date : American Megatrends Inc. P3.20, 8/19/2005
Total Physical Memory : 256.00 MB
Hard disc : Samsung SP0411N, 40GB

Actions tried as Administrator of the PC :
1. when tried to open those files using ‘MS Paint’ it gave a massage “Access to D:\**\**.JPG was denied”.
2. When tried to open those files with ‘Microsoft Photo Editor’ it gave a massage “Can’t determine type”.
3. When tried Explorer>file ‘D:\**\**. JPG’ selected>File>P roperties>Advan ced attributes>‘Enc rypt contents to secure data’ deselected>OK>A pply it gave a massage “An error occurred applying attribute to the file D:\**\**.JPG Access is denied”.
4. When tried Explorer>file ‘D:\**\**. JPG’ selected >File>Propertie s>Advanced attributes>Deta ils -a new dialog box named ‘Encryptio n details for D:\**\**.JPG’ appeared. In that new box under heading ‘User Who Can Transparently Access This File’ user name- ‘Administr ator[Administrator@A SIF]’ and certificate thumbprint- ‘1B96 639D 5A7E 6347 175B C6C4 C646 5802 91C5’ appeared and under heading ‘Data Recovery Agent ….’ there is no information.
In that new box when button `Add..` was clicked another new box ‘Select User’ appeared with a list of two present users. When the user ‘Administr ator’ was selected and OK>OK clicked a massage box naming EFSADU with a massage “Error in adding new user(s). Error code 5” appeared.

Those actions were tried using same user name and same password as it was before reinstalling.

Thank you.

I'm using the standard NTFS file system. The only time the access time is updated is when the file is modified or saved (with no changes). What's up with that? Shouldn't a read/view update the access time?

Hi, I'm writing an ASP app that administers an ISA server remotely. The fact that it's an ISA server isn't my problem I believe. My question? What is the security difference between disabling anonymous access and using account X from the web client, versus allowing anonymous access but using account X as the account that runs the application? When I configure my web application to allow anonymous access, but set the anonymous process...

Hi, Where is the y project on your HDD? IF it is for example in your profile and it is encrypted the dll will be copied to the web app's bin directory in an encrypted state. So teh ASPNET user won't be able to read it. The file is missing from your temp directory because the framework cannot read it and copy it into that directory. Regards,

I developed a small data-entry ASP.NET app on my workstation (WinXP Pro). It connects to a SQL Server 2000 DB using integrated security. This is located on a server, SERVER1. SERVER1 is also our web server. I then built the solution, & copied its folder into the wwwroot folder on SERVER1. I modified the properties in IIS so that it was configured as an application. For Directory Security, only Windows Authentication is allowed.

I am wondering would this work on FAT16 and FAT32? if File.Exists("filePath\TestingTester.exe") I know that FAT16 uses 8 char file names and that a file longer then this would be automatically renamed to let's say: file name TestingTester.exe would be called Testin~1.exe Thank you,

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
