cannot restart windows xp on laptop

2 New Member
I acted too quickly today and now I need help in restarting my computer. I hope this is the right section for posting this.

I have a Dell Inspirion laptop with Windows XP.

My computer wanted to do automatic updates and I had clicked "restart later" because I didn't have time for the process (famous last words - smile).

I clicked Start > Shut Down and the computer started going through the motions to shut down. It got to that last screen that said "windows is shutting down" and I hastily closed the laptop before it had completed that action.

Now I cannot restart the computer. I fear that this is because the system did not get to complete the shutdown process.

Is there some way to restart the computer now? Some little known trick for which I will be greatful to learn? Something I can try that doesn't include giving this one up for dead and buying a new one?

Thanks for anything you can share!

Try this,

after the dell logo press the F8 or F10 I forget which now but that will bring you to a start up screen with options. Choose the Last Good Configuration. See if that works

Good luck

Thank you for your suggestion, however, I cannot get to a Dell logo because I cannot get the computer to do anything. Nada. Nothing.

When I press the "on" button, nothing happens.

I have the laptop plugged into an outlet. The battery was at about 45% or so when I last turned it off.

I can see the little green light on the panel that I believe indicates the battery is recharging, but there is nothing on the screen and no sounds coming forth at all.

I have run my finger across the touchpad, gently pressed the on button...nothin g happens.

Anything that anyone can share is appreciated.

Thanks!

That is not a problem from the windows update. Try unplugging the laptop, then take the battery out and let it sit for a little while. Maybe an hour or so then hook it all back up and try again.

Good Luck

I'm developing an asp .net solution. Everytime I restart my PC, I get an error http 500 when trying to access the web site. If I try to open the solution in vs 2003, I'll get the same error. I found out that aspnet_wp.exe won't start again. I found a way to get control back on the .net framework by deinstalling framework 1.1/reinstalling framework + service pack 1 + rebooting the PC. Then, everything works fine, unitl next reboot (happens...

Hi, On my laptop I am running Virtual Server 2005 with 2 x Windows 2003 Servers. Both the VS can access the internet and shared files on the host laptop. On the host laptop I have a SQL Server 2000 running. I have written a Windows Service to detect Application Errors and fire duplicates of events to the database, and this service sits on both VS. It does work as I have tested it on host. BUT everytime I make application errors on the...

Hi all, I just got a new laptop, Windows XP Pro SP2. I installed IIS 5.1 using add/remove Windows Components. I installed Visual Studio 6 SP6 and Visual Studio .Net (I need both of them). Exact same setup was working fine on my old laptop. On the new laptop: IIS will serve .aspx and .html pages no problem.

A laptop we use at home displays this message and won't connect to the internet. I had used this particular laptop when setting up the wireless network and other laptops work fine. The laptop in question gets to the internet fine with a wire. Any ideas what happened and how to fix would be appreciated. I tried to go back to a restore point but that didn't work. thanks

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
