Can't boot into safe mode

86 New Member
Hello,

I don't usually like to ask for help making my computer work, but I have hit a wall with this one.

A few days ago I was browsing the Internet for a restaurant to take some friends to. Upon typing in one restaurant's web address--BAM!--virus. I had been negligent on updaing my virus definitions. Anyway, as soon as Symantec told me it detected a virus, I disconnected my CAT-5 cable, then realized I needed to update my definitions. So I reconnected, ran Live Update, then disconnected and scanned my computer. Symantec was able to quarantine two files.

I thought everything was just fine, and I could use my computer normally. However, when I later shut the computer down and tried to restart, I got a real pretty Blue Screen of Death that flickered very briefly, after which my computer rebooted itself. I can get into the BIOS just fine, and I get a message from Windows giving me the option to boot normally or to safe mode. Neither option works. As soon as the XP icon with the status bar below it appears, the computer immediately restarts.

Does anybody have any advice? Thanks!

insert the XP cd and boot from the cd, when everything is loaded instead of installing windows, press R to enter the repair console.

Once the repair console is loaded, type:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. cd \
  2.
or
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. cd ..
  2.
to have it point to the c: drive and not c:\windows. then type:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. chkdsk /R
  2.
then it will scan your disk and repairs it (will take while depending on harddive size, harddrive speed, computer speed, etc.). Once completed type:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. exit
  2.
the computer will restart, tell us how it goes.

good luck

Thanks, ePots!

That did the trick. Once I was able to complete chkdsk, I was able to boot. Appreciate the help!

have an original error "error loading operating system", tried to reboot into safe mode, no joy...I had made a copy of my boot disk, won't recognize it--still shows "error loading operating system"

I think it might be a BIOS problem, or registry.

Have XP Pro (originally bundled with system), American Megatrends BIOS v. 1.54SIS, M848A 2003 release

Maxtor 80GB HDD, on AMD 2400 platform

Thanks for any help===notify me at reb444@comcast. net

Hi There. I seem to be getting some inconsistent results when using passthru() in safe mode. They appear to be related to the fact that passthru should treat all command arguments as one single argument when safe mode is on. Everything works just fine on my MacOS X webserver ( Apache 1.3.29 with PHP 4.3.6 ). But on my Linux Enterprise 3.0 production server (running Apache 2.0.46 with PHP 4.3.2) things are different.

I have the Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Deluxe Learning Edition from Microsoft and am trying to reinstall it after a hardware system crash requiring complete reformat/reinstall of Windows XP Pro and SP2. The first time I installed on this machine under my previous OS installation, it quite happily installed on my development drive. Now, however, when I get to the Options page, the installation location dropdown is grayed out and I cannot...

Working on a computer with XP Home Edition. Suspected virus activity. Loaded AV & AS programs and ran scans. Deleted a lot of spyware, Trojans and virus'. Rebooted and working fine. Did MS update for IE7 and about 7-8 other items. After update, was asked to reboot. Now, box is locked in a boot loop. I have tried going into Last Known Good, Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking. Nothing will let me in, stuck in loop. I have booted from XP...

I am having an issue with the windows XP home ed. on my pc at home. It was scanned with Spybot on Monday night as well as by Norton (done first). The next day the startup routine was different in that the "Welcome" screen was displayed with my name in a box to click on to log in. When you click on the log in box it begins to boot up and the generic background appears for less than a second and then the blue screen with "Welcome"...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
