Restricted Broadband Internet Access

Hey Guyz....

Have recently had to change Phone companies (old one stopped trading) in the UK and was given an advanced date (1st February) and two weeks warning. The old company had a small Box between the Phone line and my system (to detect calls) and to be safe I remove this early on the 31st January (before I reverted back to my old Phone company) to make sure everything worked okay....it did. On the stroke of Midnight I checked my system just to make sure everything was okay - both my phones were fine and the Internet was still okay, or so I thought.... My 1MB Broadband was still indicating it worked okay and my Upload speed remained at 256KB, but my download dropped to 65kB from 1150KB!!. After numerous system checks and Phone calls to my Phone company (BT) who also own the Phone Lines, and my Internet Provider, who apparently needed to inform the Phone company of the changeover, I am still (8 days later) on 65kB Download speed!! No-one wants to take responsibility for this and each of the above company claims there is nothing wrong with my system, when there clearly IS!! My question:- Who is actually responsible for this - Phone company or Internet Provider, or could there be another alternative cause of the problem? Outside intervention of some kind... I am a heavy Internet User and this is really starting to get me down - Can anyone shed light on my predicament?

Hi Mark. This sounds more like one of your service providers that a Windows issue. There are several regular contributors from the UK who may check the Techie Talk Forum more often the they do here. Perhaps you'll want to give that forum a shot.

Unplug and plug back in your modem and router (if you have one) Usually slow download speeds are due to faulty hardware, try plugging the modem directly into the Ethernet card of your pc and restart. If all fails call the company again and tell them to do a line check, they can tell if the line is strong or not from the office by running a series of tests.

if you want to see what your downloa and upload speeds are as well as compare it to other users in your area you can go to DSL Reports

Best luck, Cyber

I've been playing around with Zope's RestrictedPython, and I think I'm on the way to making the modifications necessary to create a capabilities-based restricted execution system. The idea is to strip out any part of RestrictedPython that's not necessary for doing capabilities and do all security using just capabilities. The basic idea behind capabilities is that you don't give any piece of code you don't trust a reference to something...

Hi, I would like to embed a python interpreter within a program, but since that program would be able to automatically download scripts from the internet, I'd like to run those in a restricted environment, which basically means that I want to allow only a specific set of modules to be used by the scripts, so that it wouldn't be possible for them to remove files from the hard drive, kill processes or do other nasty stuff. Is there any...

Does anyone know of a way of adding sites to Internet Explorer's list of restricted sites (Internet Options / Security Options / Restricted Sites, on IE6) via C#? - there seem plenty of places to get lists of suspect websites, but I don't fancy sitting there typing them in one by one... TIA, Paul

I've got an aspnet page that is primarily a datagrid within a DIV that loads a dataset from a SQLServer call on load. It returns about 187 records. The kicker is that when i access this page from a broadband connection, it loads just fine. But when i try to access the page from a dialup 56 kbps, it says the page cannot be accessed error -1 and doesn't load the page at all.

Hi guys Wondering if you can help me with a setup issue. All my development is web based, using IIS5.1 on a Windows 2000 Server running Active Directory. Everything was working fine until I upgraded to Broadband. In order to get the internet across all my machines, I have to set the Primary DNS in network properties to the modem/router.

I need to install client software on a remote computer(s) which connect via ODBC to a MySql data base that is remote across the country. Can someone advise me on the specs for the internet connection that would give good performance? I've tried the default you get with broadband but the performance is not good at all.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
