Can XP Pro support simple file sharing and a domain simultaniously?

My SOHO network has XP Home Edition clients (simple file sharing, of course).
Now I need to bring an XP Pro laptop into the system that wants to connect to a domain controller. The two options I see are:
1) set up my XP Pro server to support both services or
2) set up the laptop to use simple file sharing at home and connect to the domain at work. Any suggestions, anyone?

If I need to set up a domain at home, I'll need some guidance to make the learning curve as steep as possible. Thanks.

When you startup the Laptop with the XP PRO press control alt delete and under domain put Local machine and you are good to go on your network, while at work simply switch it back to the domain of your workplace.

Best luck Barton.

Of course, as soon as I read that, it rang all kinds of bells. I forgot about it because this laptop as biometric login. Guess I'll need to get a password now. Thanks for the info, Cyberdyne.

I don't think biometrics work on a domain controller yet, I tried not too long ago with a microsoft biometric keyboard and it said its incompatible with the domain policies and so on. However you might have IBM that might have its own software. But regardless of the biometrics its nice to have the admin pass for the local account on your laptop, the guys at work probably know it. If they won't give it to you let me know and we will get it using loftrack.

Best to you, Cyber.

Oh... I just reallized that I can make the account myself. It's funny how this stuff can be right in from of me and until I read your comments it doesn't click. I'm currently logged in as the sys admins left index finger. I'll make myself an account now. Thanks again.

Hi Why does the following code allow me to keep the same session when in the same sub domain (ie admin.localhost), yet not when I goto another related domain eg main.localhost? I would like to have the same session on the related domain. I bet the solution is really simple <grin>!... Kind Regards

Hi, I am re-writing part of my application using C#. This application starts another process which execute a "legacy" program. This legacy program writes to a log file and before it ends, it writes a specific string to the log file. My original program (MKS Toolkit shell program) which keeps running "grep" checking the "exit string" on the "log files". There are no file sharing problem.

I have created an application that uses 3 parts: 1) a windows service that distributes email 2) a form that configures the settings (incoming address, outgoing address, etc) for that service and 3) a form that acts as a report for how that service is doing (emails sent, etc). I want the report form (3) to be updated real time with the service's progress. Right now I'm using the Singleton pattern for storing the settings & data that the...

Newbie question: I'm trying to determine if a file physically exists regardless of the permissions on it Using File.Exists() returns false if it physically exists but the process does not have the necessary permissions. One hack could be to check for length and that would throw a FileNotFoundException ...but there is got to be a better way!

<!-- When deploying the service library project, the content of the config file must be added to the host's app.config file. System.Configuration does not support config files for libraries. --> I assume "libraries" here to mean DLL's. If that's the case, is there any way to supply both ends of a service (client and host) with the code for the class that describes the contact WITHOUT a duplication in source code? Thanks.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
