Help with some research

Hi

I want to begin researching methods for a particular problem I have and
would welcome some pointers, or info if anyone has had the same issue.

At my place of work we have a display of data in the form of a java applet.
The data displayed relates to the performance of our workforce but is
provided by a third party and is only seen by us on screen. In other words
there is no raw data file received and no means of "ftp" to access the raw
data.

I want to develop an application to present the data in more meaningful form
to the end-user but have no opportunity to "interfere" with the app which
already exists.

So.....I thought what if I could read the data from the screen and use that
in my own app.

To do so I'd need to find out how to identify the location on the screen and
how to read the data at that location. Once I can do that I'm okay cos
putting it into a form that my user can use is not beyond my skills. But how
to read it from the screen location is.

Can anyone advise a source or some reading material that will get me underway.

Thanks
