Another reason for the change, Davis says, is the .NET aspect of the
operating system is not the primary selling point.

Microsoft won't drop the name .NET everywhere...

In another article, it is suggested that applications which were once
described as ApplicationName 'For Windows' had the 'For Windows' dropped
leaving just ApplicationName, and that the other product names would also
have the .NET dropped eventually also. I don't know how they are going to
manage this because they still need to differentiate between VB Classic and
VB.NET for example.

I hope its not too soon as I have just registered a company and domain using
the .NET extension.

Lets see, but in any case, change always comes, and eventually we die.

The Framework is numbered 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, ..., not Framework 2002 and
Framework 2003.

Thanks for the newsflash! This decision was made many moths ago. As others
have said in this thread, the .NET aspect of the Windows Server 2003 OS is
not the major selling point, so it may make sense to drop the .NET from the
name. So, we'll probably not see SQL Server.NET or MS Exchange.NET or
BizTalk Server.NET.

I doubt .NET will get dropped from VS.NET or VB.NET since .NET is the major
focus of those products.

I remember I read the story about the ".NET" in product names some
months/weeks before Windows 2003 was released.

Well what I've heard is that they dropped .NET from Server 2003 because it
made it sound like it was written in .NET.

Microsoft Windows .NET

or Microsoft Windows 2003, with .NET technology...

Let's all write an OS in VB.NET, using System.Reflection. Hurrah!!
