VS 2008 WTF

Ok I am now on my 5th attempt at something which just boggles my mind.

I am just trying to copy a linq query. As soon as I get to the last line
(it has continuation lines) the IDE goes to busy mode, 10 secs later it
quits.

Anybody seen this or have ideas?

And to add to this. I cannot change or do anything with the code. I
now
VS.NET 2008 has worked relatively well for me.

Maybe it's DLL hell? Time to reformat?

Interesting.

For me VS 2008 has been extremely stable (though the beta wasn't so
much).

You are running as a administrator right? And no betas installed?

Don't know what you are doing (what apps do you have installed? what 3rd
party apps? etc?) but I have never had a single problem with the UI or VS
crashing / hanging in 2008 or 2003... now 2005 was a hoot...

And to top it all off. I go to notepad. Open file. Copy text and edit
it.

Now when I attempt anything in that sub I get the dreaded VS is waiting
for a response. A response to what???? And of course this will never go
away.

I am so sick of this product. From VS 2003 to the present VS 2008 the
graphics are terrible (my little green Start button has never been able to
figure out whether it is enabled or not visually) .

This is about the 5th different workstation with various video cards and
VS has never worked correctly. MS get it together.

Must be a VB thing, because VS.NET 2005 was as solid as a rock for me
(2005 team suite). Of course, I do 99.9% of my development in C# now :)

Running on Vista, running as Admin. Only thing not out of the box is
Refactor for VB.
Hmmm... you mean the addon from devexpress? As much as I loved it for
VS2003 (though, I was using it for C#) - I ended up having to stop using
their stuff when I went to 2005 because it seemed to interact badly and
caused the IDE to crash and burn a lot. It took me to reinstalls of the
IDE before I decided to not install their stuff and see what happend -
and I never had another problem (which is too bad, because their
refactor and coderush were really cool tools).

And to date, I have had zero issues with 2008 on either Vista Ultimate
or XP Pro.

VB.NET in 2005 jammed, crashed and just flat out hung for long periods....
it was mainly compiler problems when tracked down which could explain why C#
users didn't see it much..

I run Refactor and CodeRush all the time. I use Vb under VS2008 on Vista
64-bit with 4Gb Ram

I had a few teething problems with VS at first. Turns out there were admin
priviliges needed to upgrade an IIS web based project I had, but that was
solved by launching the IDE as Admin. Other than that I have had no real
problems with VS2008.

VS2005 I only used for about 4-6 months but I will admit that it definitly
seemed to have more than it's share of issues.

Tom...

I would suggest perhaps revisting Refactor and CR!, if you have a vista machine
then I am assuming that it is a realtively beefier machine then when you
initially made the change from VS2003 to VS2005.

If there is one critisism of Refactor and Coderrush, it's that it does seem
to take up rathter a lot of memory. This can lead to large slowdowns if the
machine needs to accessing the HD to move data in and out of the swap file.

I help out over in the IDE tools Forums. If you need help with these products,
come fire me a message over there.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Lloyd, I would say if you've ben having problems with the graphics since
VS2003 then there is something very strange going on with your system.

Do you have any team mates who have a similar setup to you?
Do you have an alternative machine which you could try these things out on?

If you are having trouble with the "Green start button" this relates to windows
(I assume Win XP with themes turned on) and suggests a much bigger problem.
One outside the control of VS.

On the other hand.... you're not running windows blinds of some other skinning
technology are you? This might cause any amount of slow down and perhaps
corrupt the graphical view of any program it could not work fully with

The sad truth is that I am hearing very little against VS2008 from a stability
point of view. yours is the first I've heard of in months.

Just a few ideas

I hope something works out for you...

The problems with the Start Button have occured from VS 2003 thru VS 2005
and now in VS 2008. During that time the problem has occurred on about 5
different workstations. VS 2003 was running on XP pro. VS 2005 on both XP
Pro and Vista Ulimate and VS 2008 on Vista Ultimate.

The only common thing is the problem with the button. You have to mouse
over to make the graphic for it work correctly.

Rory,

Thanks. I would sure like to use them again sometime. The code
visualization feature in Code Rush and all the autocomplete stuff were
just plain awsome.

And the refactor stuff was light years ahead of what I got from
VS2005. In that way, it was sort of a let down going from 2003 to
2005 :)
