"So you've got the Windows API, you've got VB, and now you've got .NET,
in several language flavors, and don't get too attached to any of that,
because we're making Avalon, you see, which will only run on the newest
Microsoft operating system, which nobody will have for a loooong time.
And personally I still haven't had time to learn .NET very deeply, and
we haven't ported Fog...

I have 2 questions:
1. strlen returns an unsigned (size_t) quantity. Why is an unsigned
value more approprate than a signed value? Why is unsighned value less
appropriate?
2. Would there be any advantage in having strcat and strcpy return a
pointer to the "end" of the destination string rather than returning a

I have a couple of instances where using "Auto" did not work so I tried the
"A" version of the DLL and it works.
Tried the "W" version and it doesn't.
Anyone have any idea why that might happen?
It is true that with XP Auto uses the "W" version is it not?

I have developed a program that sends a command through the serial port
to our business system and then reads from the buffer looking for a
number. Everything worked great on my WinXP system, but when I tried
the program on the Win98 system it will be running on, I get the
following error:
Cast from string "2076719" to type 'Long' is not valid
I am not sure why I only get this error on the Win98 system or how to go
about correcting...

Just tried Ruby over the past two days. I won't bore you
with the reasons I didn't like it, however one thing really
struck me about it that I think we (the Python community)
can learn from.
Ruby has ... an issue with docs. That is to say, there are
almost none. Well, actually, there are some. For example,
the "PickAxe" book (google it), and "Why's" Poignant Guide.
But there's a disturbing lack of *built-in* docs for Ruby.
Now, the...

It seems a need a paradime shift in understanding how C++ use
libraries. Sun keeps is together under their API. And Javadoc enables a
neat way of displaying functions of a local program to display like an
API. does C++ have an easy to use an API for standard functions
anywhere? and Is their a Javadoc implementation of sorts?

Hi, all!
Before i ask my question, i want to clarify that my question is not
about the code i will show, but about what the C Standard says should
happen.
A week or so ago it occurred to me that one can implement a very basic
form of subclassing in C (the gurus certainly already know this, but
it was news to me). What i've done (shown below) seems to work all
fine and well, and does exactly what i'd expect, but i'm asking about

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
