Transitioning from VB6 -> VB 2005 - Book

[This is a one-time announcement that I hope will be of value to this
community]

I am proud to announce the immediate availability of "Programmin g Visual
Basic 2005," published by O'Reilly Media (ISBN 0-596-00949-6).

This book is targeted directly at the VB6 programmer who is interested in
moving to .NET, and who wants immediate productivity without hype and
without wasting time.

This is *not* your average programming book, and frankly, it is not like any
book I've written before. My goal was to meet the needs of a very specific
set of programmers: VB6 programmers who want to create Windows and Web
applications, and who want the core knowledge: the 90% you do 90% of the
time, maximizing use of the tools and with a focus on productivity. (Novice
programmers should find the book accessible as well, with a primer on VB in
the back to bring you up to speed).

You can read about the book and find a free support discussion forum, source
code, errata, FAQ, etc. on my web site (http://www.LibertyAssociates.com -
click on Books) where you can also buy the book at a deep discount.

About.com recently posted an objective (and not entirely positive!) review:
http://visualbasic.about.com/od/vbne...0596009496.htm

I hope you will take a look. I believe there are over a million VB
programmers waiting for the right book and the right moment to make the
switch. I'm very eager to be part of that effort, and will be working on and
announcing a series of articles and related materials to assist in the
transition.

Thank you for your consideration,
--

We will soon have 3 copies, for testing purposes, of what should be about 4.5 terrabytes of data. Rather than cmp'ing twice, to verify data integrity, I was thinking we could speed up the comparison a bit, by using a python script that does 3 reads, instead of 4 reads, per disk block - with a sufficiently large blocksize, of course. My question then is, does python have a high-level API that would facilitate this sort of thing, or...

I was recently looking at a page about transitioning from ASP 3.0 to ASP.NET. (The page I was looking at is located at http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/webtech/041601-1.shtml ). It looks to me like they are taking away what has always seemed to me like the beauty of ASP. I always viewed the beauty of ASP as giving you the ability to fill in the dynamic areas without the need to change your HTML layout techniques. But ASP.NET seems to be...

Hello, I am having a bit of trouble understanding how tcp/ip works. As a point of reference, with a serial port you essentially get byte by byte in the same order that it was sent out. With TCP/IP, because it may route individual packets via different paths, does a possibility exist that I will get some packets out of order? Or is this something that is handled by the tcp/ip stack? Secondly, how can I send tcp/ip data (i.e. length of...

Hi, I know that I'm an extreme newb by asking this overly beaten question, but I am leaning toward C#, becuase the perception is that it is better to learn than VB.Net. I guess it makes you cooler.:-) Anyhow, I am a novice programmer, and I will remain one as well...I have no plans to make programming my life ambition, but I think that it would be fun to make my databases do some cool tricks and maybe write a simplistic client to...

Hi - does anyone know of some good resources for people transitioning from VB6 to VB.NET? I just got an MSDN subscription and installed VB.NET, and it's quite a bit different from what I'm used to in VB6. Thanks a lot for any help! Dan

Please excuse my newbie-ness. I am pretty familiar with basic html, though somewhat rusty, but want to break out of the basics and start acquiring a legitimate understanding of design so as not to suck and also to be able to start being paid for it. I have no idea where to start and which direction to go. If anyone could give me just some quick suggestions. If this is not the forum for this I do apologize and could you point me in the...

I am in the process of converting a web page over to XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS, as opposed to using tables for layout. I think I am almost there, but I am having issues with borders, some strangely positioned li elements, and a flash component that doesn't seem to work quite right. The page itself is located at: http://scansystems.intentdrivenwebs.com/Index.html My CSS stylesheet is here:...

The subject line basically says it all. Which VB.net books do you feel are essential to your practice? Which books would you not want to be without? Thanks in advance.

I've altered the Subject Line to a question I posted the other day because I've found that (though I got a couple very helpful responses) my original question was a little restrictive. My real *general* question is: which VB.Net books do you find indespensible? Thanks in advance.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
