XML, Serialization for Windows Applications

BK
I am using VB.NET in Visual Studion 2003

I am going to have to build an application that uses XML, Serialization and
display. I have been asked to implement it using XML. I have done some
reading and am trying to put the pieces together before coding but never
having worked seriously with XML, I need some direction.

I will be generating an XML of the contents of a CDs and DVDs. The
hierarchy will contain file attributes in addition to file and folder names –
think Windows Explorer. The only difference between windows explorer and my
app would be that I would have to serialize and de-serialize it. I would
prefer binary serialization so that I could BLOB it into an access database.

Question1: My XML will contain File Attribute TAGS (DateCreated,
DateModified etc). How do I NOT display some tags it in the tree view? Once
again referring to Windows Explorer – the attributes are on the right hand
pane only. I know I can use a CSS or XSLT in a browser to display what I want
but this will be a Windows Application. How can I achieve a similar
formatting?

Question2: Is there any Event that can display the ‘hidden’ attributes of a
file OnClick of a File Node?

Question3: How do I search for File Name in the XML? Do I use XML Technology
XPATH and stuff? If yes can anyone give me an example? I guess if I found
something matching, I would have to select the File Node and display it’s
attributes in the right pane or would the display be any different?

Any and all guidance/comment/URLs will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello, does anyone know why standard .NET console or windows applications that do nothing start out with a minimum of 3 threads??? Aren't 3 threads far to many for an application that does nothing??? What are they for??? Any article around that explains their purpose??? Bob Rock

Please note this is NOT a rant or complaint! And yes, I'm over-simplifying, but intentionally. Here goes... With ASP.NET Web applications I like that I can access data from anywhere without installing anything on the client (but I hate HTML and markup in general and it's limitations, the request/response model, state management, etc). ...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. For...
